Playing the "What If" Game with Week Five's Upset Saturday
I hate to play the "What If" game.
I really do. I feel the need to make that known before going any further.
But if you witnessed "Upset Saturday", there is no doubt that "What If" creeped into your mind at some point.
Maybe it was when "your" team was being upset by Colorado...or Auburn...or Kansas State...or South Florida...or Georiga Tech. But my "What If" didn't occur during Oklahoma's loss—it occured earlier this evening on the phone with my buddy, Mark, when said, "What if this is only the tip of the iceberg?"
I am fully aware that there is a ton of football left to be played this season. But if you look at the remaining schedules of the Top 10 undefeated teams, you see the warning signs.
At the top, USC has tough road games against California, Oregon, and Arizona State. We all saw how impressive both Cal and Oregon were Saturday. Dennis Erickson has the Sun Devils clicking on all cylinders. So the Men of Troy have three distinct upset possibilities on the road. If you are a betting man, would you bet they get through that schedule un-blemished, especially after how un-spectacular they've played? Neither would I.
LSU plays in the SEC...enough said. It is almost impossible to get through an entire SEC conference schedule undefeated.
Cal goes on the road against UCLA, Arizona State, and Washington—plus the home game against USC. Chalk up one loss, at least.
Ohio State travles to Purdue this weekend, followed by road trips to Happy Valley and to Michigan. I'm not confident enough in quarterback Todd Boeckman to predict the Buckeyes finishing 12-0.
Wisconsin has road games against Ohio State, Illinois, and Penn State. The Badgers could have the easiest schedule of all the contenders, but that game in Columbus looms large.
Boston College has to come down to earth soon, don't they? Matt Ryan is playing his way into Heisman Trophy talk—but with games left at Virginia Tech and Clemson, and home against Florida State and Miami...I see at least two losses. Sorry BC.
That leaves only one team: Kentucky.
Yes, Andre Woodson is the best quarterback this side of Hawaii. Yes, the Wildcats FINALLY beat Louisville. No, they will not end the year undefeated. If LSU can't do it in the SEC, neither can Kentucky.
See what I mean?
Upset Saturday could have started a major college football quagmire. What will the wacky BCS do if more than two teams end the year with one loss? Who in the world would be able to say one team deserves to play another if they all have similar records?
I hope everything plays itself out between now and December. But what if...
