Robert Griffin III Injury Update: Redskins QB Cleared to Return to Game Action

Tim DanielsSep 11, 2015

Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III is cleared for a return to game action after overcoming a concussion suffered during the preseason, team president Bruce Allen announced Friday.

Dan Hellie of NFL Network provided confirmation from Allen on Griffin's status. George Wallace of WTOP notes the former starter received official medical clearance from doctors Thursday night.

The news doesn't change the Redskins' outlook for their season opener against the Miami Dolphins on Sunday. Head coach Jay Gruden previously named Kirk Cousins as the starter under center for the entire 2015 season, as noted by Kevin Patra of NFL.com.

"When it's all said and done, after all the film we've gone through, after all the offseason activity, all the training camp footage, we feel like at this time, Kirk Cousins gives us the best chance to win and that's where we're going," Gruden said. "It's Kirk's team."

The clearance does end an awkward stretch for the Redskins. After an original decision to let Griffin back onto the field, the team reversed course ahead of its third preseason game and announced he would be held out of action until he was retested.

A myriad of injury woes have seemingly sapped the 25-year-old quarterback of the dynamic playmaking ability he showcased as a rookie. He's missed 10 games over the past two seasons while watching his passer rating drop from 102.4 into the mid-80s.

Now the question is whether he'll get another chance with the Redskins. His cap hit is projected to jump to more than $16 million next season, per Spotrac, and there's obviously no way the team could pay that much to a backup. It also has Colt McCoy on the roster.

Griffin is ready for action, but for now he'll be relegated to the sidelines until an injury arises or Cousins struggles and forces the coaching staff to consider other options.
