Breaking Down the Best and Worst of the WWE for Week of Sept. 7

Ryan DilbertSep 11, 2015

WWE finally made the Divas Revolution messy, riotous and enthralling.

After weeks of talking up its women's division, but doing little more for it than extending ring time, the company offered a showcase of overflowing animosity on SmackDown. A match between Paige and Sasha Banks ended in a pro wrestling staple—the pull-apart brawl.

This welcome bit of anarchy arrived just before news that a historic bout is headed to NXT TakeOver in October. Banks will find herself in a battle that night that could outdo her instant classic with Bayley last month.

Add The Wyatt Family looking like the monsters they claim to be, and there was ample reason to tune into WWE TV this week.

Fans who did so, though, also saw the company bungle how it booked the two men set to main event Night of Champions. Sting came off as a prankster rather than a vigilante who makes villains nervous. Seth Rollins continued to worsen his win-loss record.

WWE's misfires came with those marquee names, while its biggest triumphs came from unexpected places in the women's division and SmackDown.

Best: The Brawl

1 of 5

Team B.A.D., PCB and Team Bella have brawled in the past, but this was different. The fray was born from overflowing tension, the natural next step after two warriors turned a competition into a street fight.

Paige and Sasha Banks collided on Monday's Raw first. Banks won thanks to a distraction from Naomi. It was an underwhelming finish, but WWE did well to turn Paige's frustration into kindling for a fire that erupted on Thursday's SmackDown.

Their rematch turned ugly fast.

Paige was angry. Banks matched her aggression. Soon both women were rolling around the mat and outside the ring, locked onto each other like two sea creatures battling in the ocean.

Each woman's teammates didn't hesitate to rush out. A two-woman fight then morphed into the kind of all-out scrum that is not a part of the women's division often enough.

And with that, SmackDown gets a big highlight, the next meeting of these teams promises to be mighty intense and the women's division now has a full-fledged feud outside of the standard champion-versus-challenger one.

It will be easy to build on this personal issue. It will be easy for Banks and Paige to churn out a classic once they get a chance to settle this in the ring.

Worst: Silly Sting

2 of 5

WWE did nothing to make it more believable that Sting can defeat Seth Rollins. On Monday's Raw, Sting instead goofed around backstage, making funny faces next to the champ's statue.

Rather than continue to portray Sting as a supernatural vigilante bent on taking down The Authority, the company presented him as a doofy jokester.

Steve Austin destroyed property as Sting did on Raw, but that kind of defiant act worked in concert with his onscreen bad-ass actions as well. And he didn't play the moments for laughs; they were acts of vandalism instead. He still came out looking like the baddest man on the roster.

That is far from the case with Sting. He was too much like Joker Sting from TNA and too much like the worst part of John Cena's character.

WWE now has just one week left of buildup for Night of Champions. It has its work cut out to have him look like a viable challenger.

Best: The Wyatt Family on the Attack

3 of 5

The Wyatt Family struck twice. The clan made it clear that if you align with Roman Reigns and Dean Ambrose in any way, you are assured their wrath.

Randy Orton only talked to the two babyfaces but still found himself surrounded by the bruisers at the end of his match with Sheamus. Bray Wyatt led the charge and ambushed The Viper.

On Thursday's SmackDown, Jimmy Uso ended the night unconscious after Braun Strowman crushed him in his arms. That was punishment for teaming with Reigns and Ambrose.

These attacks showcase The Wyatt Family's power and their mercilessness. This is the kind of destruction they were born to cause.

And it all adds to the reasons Reigns and Ambrose have to tear down the fearsome trio.

They are monsters on the loose. Watching them feast has been fun, but seeing them pay for their sins will be even better.

Worst: Losses Piling Up for Seth Rollins

4 of 5

Seth Rollins ended up scoring a cheap win on Thursday's SmackDown, but that's not enough to make up for his diminishing momentum.

He competed twice on Monday night and lost both times. The WWE champ fell to Ryback and then in six-man action later on. The story was supposed to be that Sting's mind games have him unraveling, leading to these failures.

The trouble is, Rollins has failed plenty since winning the title. He didn't need Sting's help there.

The defeats on Monday's Raw just add to a bloated loss column that also boasts the times he tapped out to John Cena, lost to J&J Security and fell to Dean Ambrose.

Rather than let Rollins convince us that he's worthy of his title, WWE too often makes him feel like someone who lucked into that spot. The great world champs of the past didn't fail so often. As a result, it's only logical to not view him as in that class.

Best: Iron Woman Match on the Way

5 of 5

With the glow of Bayley and Sasha Banks' masterpiece at NXT TakeOver: Brooklyn not yet faded, those women are set to get another shot at creating something special.

WWE announced on its website that Bayley and Banks will not only main event the next TakeOver on Oct. 7, but also they will do so in a 30-minute Iron Man match. That's a stipulation flush with drama that WWE hasn't used nearly enough. And this will be the first one involving two women.

It's smart to build on Banks and Bayley's great chemistry this way, showcase the new champion in historic fashion and make the live special a groundbreaking one.

NXT continues to be the home for innovation. That's where officials not only trust their women, but also recognize that they are capable of being marquee stars.

With added animosity, added hype and a fun stipulation to play with, Bayley vs. Banks II promises to threaten their first meeting as the front-runner for Match of the Year.
