Anthony Joshua vs. Gary Cornish: Fight Time, Date, Live Stream and TV Info

Rob LancasterSep 11, 2015

Anthony Joshua gets the chance to become Commonwealth heavyweight champion when he takes on fellow unbeaten fighter Gary Cornish on Saturday.

The Londoner Joshua, who will have home advantage at the O2 Arena, is 13-0 since turning professional following his success at the 2012 Olympic Games.

Cornish (21-0, 12 KOs) is also perfect in the paid ranks, though he hasn't attracted the same media interest as his next opponent.

Joshua has obliterated the 13 opponents he has faced in the ring so far. He has stopped them all inside the distance and is yet to be extended beyond the third round.

However, things should now start to get a little tougher for the 25-year-old.

He claimed the WBC international heavyweight title with a TKO triumph over experienced American Kevin Johnson last time out but now has his sights set on adding a few more belts to his collection.

Cornish stands in the way of Joshua picking up the Commonwealth strap, but plans are already in place for a fight for the British version before the end of the year.

Promoter Eddie Hearn has signed a deal for Joshua to face Whyte on December 12. The latter won when they met in the amateurs, and there is plenty of animosity between the pair.

Per Sky Sports, Whyte branded the Olympic gold medalist a "housewife" at the pre-fight press conference on Thursday, before adding, "He's sitting there like a robot. I cannot wait for his batteries to run out."

Joshua kept his cool in the face of such provocation, knowing he first has a job to do against Cornish.

However, it's easy to get a little carried away with Joshua's potential in a division that is desperate for more star quality.

Former heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield has had his say on Joshua, telling Sky Sports: "I think you have to shoot for [Wladimir] Klitschko, you have to shoot for one of the guys who is a champion. The only way to be a champion is to beat a champion. That's the risk you have to take."

For once, though, Joshua will be the smaller man in the ring this weekend. While he measures 6'6", Cornish stands tall at 6'7". It may only be a slight difference, but the Scot will take any advantage he can get.

Quiet Cornish

While much of the focus during the week has been on the potential showdown between Joshua and Whyte later this year, Cornish has seemed content to remain in the background.

That's not easy to do when you're a man of his height, but the Scotsman can do his talking in the ring.

However, he said that he expects his travelling support to make some noise on Saturday night when he bids to upset the odds, telling Michael Gannon of the Daily Record:

"

I’ve never been in better shape. I’ve been able to get time off work. These boys box for a living—but I am a joiner for a living.

It’s definitely the biggest stage I’ve fought on. It’ll probably fire me up.

I’ve fought in England a couple of times. There’s quite a big crowd coming down from Scotland for this—and they’ll be vocal. When you start boxing you dream of fighting for a title.

"

Cornish needs to forget about the day job and focus on the sizable task on hand—cutting down Joshua and becoming Commonwealth champion.

The Highlander doesn't quite have the same knockout ratio as the Englishman (Cornish's KO mark stands at 57 percent), but he is unbeaten.

Both men have a win over journeyman Paul Butlin on their records, while Cornish also outpointed Larry Olubamiwo in an eight-rounder last September.

Since beating Olubamiwo, the 28-year-old has knocked out Marino Goles in one and recorded a fourth-round stoppage over Zoltan Csala. The second of those victories saw him pick up the IBO intercontinental heavyweight crown.

Prediction

Cornish has both the professional record and the physical attributes to suggest he can give Joshua the toughest test of his career to date.

The underdog must come out of the traps quickly—simply hoping to hang around and survive is the wrong tactic against a concussive puncher who could finish the bout in a hurry.

Joshua will extend his unbeaten run and pick up a title along the way with a third-round stoppage. Don't be too surprised if there are some fireworks involving Whyte after the bout, either.
