Simon Peach of the Press Association shared a video of Martial using crutches to get to the French team bus, noting that his foot was bandaged:
Martial started France's match against England but was replaced by Atletico Madrid's Antoine Griezmann in the second half, likely because of the injury. French manager Didier Deschamps later told reporters the forward complained of "quite a bit of pain," although he was hopeful it was just a minor injury, per the Guardian's Daniel Taylor.
Injury Interrupts Martial's Fast Start at United
The 19-year-old moved to Old Trafford from AS Monaco for an initial price of £36 million, which could rise even higher—a fee even Van Gaal suggested was “ridiculous,” per Sky Sports.
Few expected Martial to live up to the lofty price tag in his first season, but he shocked just about everyone by scoring against Liverpool on his debut and playing remarkably well in the weeks that followed.
Used as both a striker and winger, Martial quickly became a regular starter and one of United's main danger men. While he didn't immediately light the Premier League on fire as far as statistics go, his raw athleticism and great holdup play have served the Red Devils well and turned the France international into one of the team's main threats.
Replacing Martial isn't an easy task for United. Scoring has been a major issue in 2015-16, and the club's lack of depth in terms of strikers has been highlighted by the fact Van Gaal could never fall back on anyone to provide a spark off the bench.
Martial has never struggled with injuries in the past, so fans can be hopeful he'll make a full recovery and that this setback is nothing but a blip on what has otherwise been a great first season in England.
