Talks Between Bradford, Eagles End Ahead of Regular Season

Wednesday, Sept. 9

Ed Werder of ESPN reports the sides are no longer involved in talks about a potential contract. He noted the main reason for that is the quarterback's success during the exhibition slate. He completed 13 of 15 passes with three touchdowns and no interceptions in limited duty.

At the outset, a short-term agreement for an additional year or two beyond the 2015 campaign made sense for both sides.

It would have given the Eagles a little more clarity on the future of the position. Bradford is currently in the final year of his current deal, which checks in at a shade under $13 million, per Spotrac, and he could hit the open market next offseason.

On the flip side, the Oklahoma product has struggled to stay healthy throughout his NFL career. After playing 16 games as a rookie in 2010, he's missed a combined 31 games over the past four years, including the entire 2014 season.

A few additional years could have provided valuable stability while he attempted to rebuild his market value. As Werder noted, however, playing so well in the preseason has changed things.

It's great news for the Eagles in terms of their outlook for this season, but it also means Bradford can push toward a more long-term, lucrative extension.

Philadelphia won't have much choice but to give it to him if his success continues. The supply of reliable quarterbacks doesn't meet the demand, which means the 27-year-old signal-caller would receive a massive amount of interest as a free agent if he can have a solid, healthy 2015.

At least for now, it appears the contract discussions are on hold as the Eagles prepare to open the season with a Monday night clash against the Atlanta Falcons.
