WWE Night of Champions 2015: Smart Builds for PPV's Top Feuds

Brad JonesSep 8, 2015

The build to Night of Champions is typically simpler than most other WWE pay-per-views—establish the top contender to each major championship and allow things to develop organically. However, this year's event on September 20 already seems to be set to buck that trend.

With the Divas Championship and the tag team titles set to be defended on Raw next week, there's plenty of opportunity for possession of those belts to change ahead of the show. Meanwhile, Seth Rollins will find himself doing double duty on the night.

It seems that WWE is doing everything possible to prevent Night of Champions from being predictable. The key, as ever, is putting together title matches that fans will pay to see—and here are three builds that will do just that.

Dean Ambrose and Roman Reigns vs. the Wyatt Family

With Bray Wyatt once again fulfilling his role as a cult leader, thanks to his recent acquisition of Braun Strowman, his family is looking a lot more menacing. For the first time since this feud began, Roman Reigns and Dean Ambrose are truly on the back foot.

There's a lot of potential for this flashback to the hot rivalry between the Wyatts and The Shield, but the next chapter will be crucial. For the time being, the focus has to be on the third man that Ambrose and Reigns need to even the odds.

Sting had been rumoured for the role, according to F4WOnline.com (via WrestleZone.com's Nick Paglino). More recently, Erick Rowan has been seen as a possibility, with some fans putting Daniel Bryan forward as a dark horse. Whoever the third man is, it would be wise to keep a lid on the information for as long as possible.

As a three-man unit attacking the duo of Ambrose and Reigns, the Wyatt Family has seemed far more dominant than it has in a long time. This program could easily repair the Wyatts' reputation—and giving them the man advantage will make the reveal of the sixth wrestler in the match much more impactful.

Of course, that assumes someone interesting is waiting in the wings. If Ambrose and Reigns unveil someone such as Kane as their partner, no amount of anticipation time is going to make that announcement surprising.

With one eye on the future, it makes a lot of sense to make Strowman the focus of this build. He's a new face who needs to be built up in the eyes of the audience, and with Luke Harper to cover for any limitations in the ring and Wyatt to do the heavy lifting on the microphone, he's well set.

However, the intrigue of the pay-per-view match is all about the reveal of Ambrose and Reigns' partner. If WWE keeps that element of the feud central over the next couple of weeks, this will be one of the strongest matches on the card come September 20.

Charlotte vs. Nikki Bella

Next week on Raw, Charlotte will have the opportunity to cut Nikki Bella's reign as Divas champion short, just before she would break the record currently held by AJ Lee. Still, we already know that the title will be defended once again at Night of Champions.

As such, the build for the PPV match is inextricably tied to next Monday's edition of Raw. We could see a huge number of outcomes unfold, and all of them would have different effects on the title match set for this month's pay-per-view.

Plenty of outlandish scenarios could play out; Sasha Banks could interject and stake a claim for her own shot at the belt, or AJ could make a return to ensure that her record stands. However, for the time being, it seems that Charlotte and Nikki will be the pair battling at Night of Champions.

Charlotte has to win the title for the Divas Revolution to fit its billing, but it remains to be seen whether she'll do it next week on Raw or have to wait until Night of Champions. At present, a suspect finish to the title match on Monday seems likely.

It's not difficult to imagine one of Team Bella getting involved with the match to cause a disqualification—or it could be Paige who steps in, having been outshone rather thoroughly by both Charlotte and Becky Lynch since the duo of NXT stars debuted on the main roster.

Whatever the specifics turn out to be, Nikki will break AJ Lee's record next Monday, only to lose the title at Night of Champions just a few days later. Short of an unexpected return on next week's broadcast, that's the best way to make the title change have the biggest impact.

Sting vs. Seth Rollins

Prior to the Raw directly following SummerSlam, popular opinion seemed to have Sting down for a team-up with Roman Reigns and Dean Ambrose. Now, we know that the Vigilante's second match in WWE will see him challenge Seth Rollins for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship.

Up to this point, the issue between the two has largely centred on a statue of Rollins paid for by The Authority. This plot device gave the Stinger plenty of opportunity to showcase the unhinged portion of his persona—but on this week's Raw broadcast, that statue was destroyed.

Now, this feud needs a new hook. Given that Rollins is still a largely unproven champion and Sting is a bona fide legend, there's an easy narrative to find in the clash of characters. However, it has to mean something more in terms of Rollins' journey to the top.

The key to The Architect as a character is that he has all the potential necessary to do things the right way—however, despite that, he relies on shortcuts and friends in high places because it's easier. Of course, anyone who acts that way is always going to end up in a situation they can't weasel out of.

For Rollins, that moment looks set to take place at Night of Champions. He needs to defend a pair of titles against men who are destined for the Hall of Fame—and there's the ever-present threat of a cash-in from Mr. Money in the Bank, Sheamus.

For the next few weeks, Sting needs to pile on the pressure. Everything is up against Rollins at present, and some televised head games would be a perfect way of reiterating that fact. The Architect will come out on top at the pay-per-view, but Sting needs to hold the advantage until that match begins.
