Nikki Bella vs. Charlotte: Title Change Should Spell the End of Team PCB

Erik BeastonSep 8, 2015

When Nikki Bella defends the WWE Divas Championship against Charlotte on the September 14 episode of Raw, it will be the culmination of an angle that began this past June and featured the debut of three incredibly talented female workers, bringing about change in what Stephanie McMahon referred to as a "Divas Revolution."

Nine workers were split into three teams, setting up a massive elimination tag match at SummerSlam. Unfortunately, horrible booking along the way saw many of the women become characterless and watered-down versions of what they were previously.

The main reason for that is the fact that the Divas were thrown into groups rather than allowed to establish themselves and their personalities. Luckily, WWE has the opportunity to right that wrong come next Monday night, when Charlotte challenges for the top prize in women's wrestling.

A championship victory that would put an end to Bella's historic title reign would present WWE Creative with the chance to put an end to the three-team war and focus more on building individuals in whom fans can invest, beginning with the demise of Team PCB.

As the babyfaces of the Divas division, Paige, Charlotte and Becky Lynch should have the focus of WWE Creative. Rather than banding them together and forcing them to lose their individual identities, the company's writers should seize the opportunity that a potential Charlotte victory would bring with it and split the team up.

Paige would presumably remain the "anti-Diva" and Charlotte the "genetically superior" Diva. The one to benefit most would be Lynch, whose character has been largely undefined dating back to her time in NXT.

Continuing to book Team PCB as a group rather than splitting it up, should Charlotte dethrone Nikki, would be detrimental to all involved.

Paige and Becky would essentially play second fiddle, too stupid to set their sights on the title that every Diva should be concerned with winning. They would look like sidekicks, a perception which would help no one.

Worst of all, it would continue the status quo rather than progressing the story, which would be an even bigger travesty.

The fact of the matter is that Paige, Lynch and Charlotte are all far too talented to take back seats to each other while WWE lazily books its female talent in a trios war that has far surpassed its expiration date.

And that does not even cover Sasha Banks, who has suffered most from the company's brand of storytelling over the last two months.

At this point, the so-called Divas Revolution that commentators like Michael Cole and Rich Brennan continue to pimp on Raw and SmackDown is a revolution in name alone. The downfall of Nikki Bella and her tyrannical reign as Divas champion should change that for the better.

If not, WWE will miss out on the greatest opportunity it has had in its existence to get fans to accept women's wrestling as a credible and legitimate element of its television and live-event product.
