Saido Berahino Must 'Grow Up' After Failed Tottenham Transfer, Says Tony Pulis

Rory MarsdenSep 7, 2015

West Bromwich Albion manager Tony Pulis has said his star striker Saido Berahino must "grow up" after the Englishman responded petulantly to missing out on a move to Tottenham Hotspur.

Berahino was heavily linked with a move to White Hart Lane but West Brom chairman Jeremy Peace blocked the switch, rejecting a total of four bids from Spurs, per BBC Sport.

Bleacher Report's Sam Tighe, though, also puts some blame at the door of Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy:

The 22-year-old forward was clearly unhappy at the events of the transfer window and seemed to suggest on Twitter that he was not prepared to turn out for the Baggies anymore, via ESPN FC:

Pulis has put the response down to bad advice but has encouraged Berahino to show some respect for the club that have nurtured him in the early part of his career, per the Daily Mail's Neil Ashton:

"

Saido wants to test himself at the highest level, to push himself to his limits, against and with the top players in this country. Every sportsman should be allowed the opportunity to better themselves in life, to be ambitious and not to settle for the comfort zone. Saido's problem has been how he he's gone about it, and how he has been manipulated into situations that have put him in such a bad light. Respect has to be earned and Saido has to learn that lesson.

West Brom have nurtured Saido's career for over a decade, the people in the club and on the terraces have supported him, and given him the platform from which he stands today. They deserve the utmost respect and at times unwillingly he has shown them little. Do I think he's meant it? Of course not, but he has to grow up and wise up to the fact that people at West Brom have supported him right from the beginning of his career.

"

There is little doubt that Berahino will end up at one of the top clubs in the Premier League—Spurs are still the most likely option—and he deserves such a move.

His 14 league goals in the 2014-15 Premier League season were key in helping West Brom avoid relegation, per WhoScored.com.

However, Berahino's ambitions surely also stretch to sealing a place in the England national team, especially with Euro 2016 looming next summer.

As the football writer Henry Winter noted, he will have to show his quality in a West Brom shirt again if he wants to claim a place in Roy Hodgson's squad for the France competition:

Pulis admitted "it will be difficult to integrate" Berahino back into the Baggies squad after he made it so clear he wished to depart the club, per Ashton.

But such is the striker's quality and value to the side that a way can surely be found to ease him back into the squad—West Brom's next match is against Southampton on Saturday.

As Pulis suggested, that will require some acquiescence and humility on Berahino's part, but it will benefit both parties if he can be back playing again as soon as possible.
