The eventual 2001 National League Central Champion Cardinals were set to play the Milwaukee Brewers on September 17, 2001. The Brewers sat 21.5 games out of first place. In the standings , the game meant very little. In real life, many were unsure if the game was relevant at all.
Baseball returned to St. Louis on September 17th after the horrific events of September 11th.

I remember the eerie feeling in the air that night; players, managers, fans, ushers…all unsure if the ballpark is where they were supposed to be that night. People at home, wondering if their time could be better spent, instead of watching yet another game on television. Thankfully, St. Louis’ prized jewel and Hall of Fame broadcaster Jack Buck, provided a voice of reason.
It was one of those rare “baseball moments” where magic happened on the field without a ball in play.
