Sasha Banks In Danger of Falling Into Background As Member of Team BAD
No WWE Diva has done more over the last year to solidify her status as the best women's wrestler in the company than Sasha Banks. Despite the classic matches, character development and tremendous support she has from the WWE Universe, The Boss now finds herself in danger of fading into the background as the promotion hypes a so-called "Divas Revolution."
The former NXT women's champion is fresh off another Match of the Year candidate against Bayley at the most recent TakeOver special. Despite that, and the fact that her entrance into the Barclays Center on that evening drew one of the loudest ovations, she is the one performer who has suffered as a result of the company's renewed emphasis on women's wrestling every Monday and Thursday night.
The biggest problem is that Banks was saddled with Naomi and Tamina Snuka.
Even prior to the arrival of the NXT Divas, it was clear that the company had no real plans for either of those two women. Even though she had enjoyed an impressive push and successful heel turn over the spring, Naomi had been demoted in the weeks preceding the arrival of the fresh faces. She was a glorified jobber for both Paige and Nikki Bella.
For that reason, it was somewhat strange that WWE would saddle the molten-hot Banks with two women that had been increasingly falling out of favor with management for weeks prior to her arrival.
That should have been the first red flag.
The fact that Banks was left to play second fiddle to Naomi should have been another one.
There was a reason Banks was nicknamed The Boss. During her time in NXT, she forcefully grabbed the spotlight from her peers. Any time she was saddled in a team with someone else, her presence and performance demanded the attention of the audience.
As part of Team B.A.D., though, it did not matter. Naomi was positioned as the leader and given the most mic time.
And then there are recent developments in the Divas Revolution that have seen Team Bella and Team PCB take center stage, leaving Banks, Naomi and Tamina to serve as fodder for the other six competitors.
All of the above adds up to a massive waste of the most talented and over Diva on the roster.
Sasha Banks is the type of performer who comes along once in a lifetime. She has a perfect mixture of tremendous wrestling skill and a character that has helped her win the support and adoration of the fans despite clearly being a heel. She is being utterly wasted in her current role, thanks to WWE Creative's general impotency when it comes to booking anyone but the central focus of that week's story.
The first step to rehabilitating Banks as a main roster Diva is to break her away from Naomi and Tamina. Sure, that would all but dissolve Team B.A.D. but it is a sacrifice that has to be made. Both of Banks' current associates are perceived to be losers, and rightfully so given the way that they have been booked.
Banks needs to get as far away from them as possible and be the alternative. She needs to be the strong, independent woman who does not need the support of two other women to be the best. She already is, and she got there by beating the likes of Charlotte and Becky Lynch on her own in NXT.
The second is to give her increased television time and quality victories.
To this point, Banks has scored a clean submission victory over Nikki Bella, but that win was never followed up on. It is barely mentioned, and Banks has been left to flounder while Charlotte and Lynch have scored big wins in pay-per-view settings.
That needs to be fixed immediately.
Wins over Bella, over Paige and Charlotte, are exactly what Banks needs to remain a factor in the Divas title hunt. Make her the face of Team B.A.D., give the faction her theme music and let fans perceive her as the face of the trio.
Banks is a special performer, and WWE's use of her to this point indicates that, as long as Vince McMahon is in charge, there will never be a Divas Revolution, no matter how hard he and his daughter try to create buzz through flashy hashtags.
There is no one on the current main roster of Divas who can even touch Banks when it comes to ability between the ropes. That is why watching her wallow away in Team B.A.D. when she should be stealing the show every Monday, Thursday and third Sunday is that much more frustrating.
If given the opportunity, though, she will be the one to bring about change in the Divas division and create that revolution the McMahon family is all-too-eager to spark.
Banks on it!
