The New Day and the Best WWE Mic Mastery for Week of August 31
The New Day's plea to "save the tables" to open Thursday's SmackDown served as the latest example that the WWE tag team champs are savants in the art of annoyance.
Xavier Woods, Kofi Kingston and Big E have made a habit of stealing the show by way of their over-celebrations, exuberant ridiculousness and outside-the-box approach to working the mic. While some members of the roster are still in search of their voices, The New Day have not only found theirs but have found a means to make theirs the loudest, most prominent ones in the room.
Fans didn't have to wait long for the highlight of the first SmackDown of September. The New Day kicked off the show with an emphatic address.

Most Likely Backlash Heel/Face Turns 🎭
The trio talked up the importance of tables. Their current archenemies have a habit of slamming people through them, and the trio believe this to be barbaric, not to mention a waste.
As they have been often as of late, The New Day were entertainingly grating. They seem to believe their silly message wholeheartedly. They appear completely unaware that crediting a table for playing a major role in the first moon landing is absurd.
Kingston told the crowd with a straight face, "Tables like that one right there are the backbone of human achievement."
Not only is this shtick the funniest thing going in WWE right now, but it has allowed the members of The New Day to distinguish themselves from the rest of the roster. These arrogant heels have established clear characters unlike any others on WWE TV at the moment.
Promos can't all be threats and bluster. There's clearly a place for the ludicrous.
And The New Day's inclination to protect tables is a smart way to make them natural enemies for The Dudley Boyz. It highlights the fan favorites' most famous act of violence and creates a strong desire to see The New Day get their own taste of broken wood.
Every bubble-wrapped table, every impassioned cry for The Dudley Boyz to leave furniture alone is akin to waving a red cloth in front of a bull.
Following their speech, protest and their chant of "Save the tables!", the tag team champions slid over to the announce desk. Here they continued their needling of the audience and of their foes.
On commentary, The New Day seemed to be having a blast. Big E called one move an "arm device." Woods mocked Bubba Ray Dudley's camouflage gear, wondering aloud why he couldn't see the bruiser's bottom half.
They offered unique insults rather than just obvious jabs. The New Day labeled The Dudley Boyz "dirty table poachers," and Woods said that Titus O'Neil looked like "a German shepherd that ate too many stale potato chips."
This approach can help make a wrestler more memorable. Countless wrestlers have called each other names, but many fans still remember Freddie Blassie famously dubbing his enemies "pencil-neck geeks" decades ago.
The champs thrived in this spot. The folks at The History of WWE are among those who want to see more of The New Day at the announce desk:
Even with all the success that Woods and his crew are having, even as much fun as they have been to watch, though, there is an element missing to their character.
There needs to be more viciousness mixed in with these antics. The New Day have to remind us that they are not just jokesters but lowlifes as well.
Jim Ross had similar thoughts. The Hall of Fame announcer wrote on his blog, "I like the trio as they are highly entertaining but do you want your top villain team to be overly entertaining or disliked?"
They can be both. It's the latter trait that they need to work on.
The New Day deserve a wealth of kudos for their evolution from bland, one-dimensional characters to the hilarious, trombone-playing egotists they are today. Still, there is still room to continue that growth.
Adding fangs to their grins is the key to that.
