Sorry Charlie...It's Time To Pack
Remember when the Notre Dame alumni posted a bulletin advertising Charlie Weis' internship at the University of Notre Dame?
Yeah, I know. It wasn't that long ago. I ask if you remember because it got taken down. After this past Saturday's loss to Michigan, I am not sure it should have been.
I understand that Jimmy Clausen seems to have put all the pieces together. Furthermore, I was watching the game, and it was obvious that he seemingly was unstoppable all day long. For what it is worth, though, Armando Allen was unstoppable all day long as well.
The only difference between the two was that when Allen got touches in the red zone, he made them count. Clausen didn't.
I do not care how stubborn of a coach you are. I do not care how pass happy of an offensive play caller you are. When the ground game is working as well as it was for Notre Dame on Saturday, you do not abandon it. You ride it all the way to a victory.
Forget that last drive when Weis inexplicably called two pass plays instead of forcing Michigan to use its final two timeouts. Where were the run calls the entire second half of the game?
Allen picked up 7 carries in the first quarter for 56 yards. He finished the first half with 93 yards on 13 carries. Here is where the play calling gets staggeringly bad. In that third quarter in which the Fighting Irish failed to score, Allen picked up just one carry. He finished with 139 yards on 21 carries.
To make the play calling just a little bit more confusing, on Notre Dame's final drive, Allen ran for 13 yards on first down. It was his last carry of the game.
Here is a word of advice Charlie, stubborn only works when you win.
