WWE Night of Champions 2015: John Cena & Sting Are Tough Tests for Seth Rollins

Sebastian MaldonadoSep 4, 2015

What a difference a week makes!

Seth Rollins left SummerSlam on top of the world. He defeated John Cena and became the first man to hold the WWE world heavyweight and United States titles simultaneously.

Rollins entered Raw at the Barclays Center the next night with a huge grin on his face. The double champion expected a bronze statue in his honor from Triple H and Stephanie McMahon. He got Sting instead.

WWE’s vigilante ambushed Rollins, hitting his Stinger Splash in the corner before sending him out of the ring.

Triple H took action after Raw ended. He made Sting the No.1 contender for the WWE title, meaning Sting will get his first shot versus Rollins at Night of Champions.

The next episode of Raw featured Rollins calling out Sting to face him in the ring. He got John Cena instead.

Cena confronted Rollins and explained how Rollins was just another gear for The Authority to exploit. Cena stated how they didn’t care about Rollins, and he then decided to prove it.

Cena announced his plans to enact his rematch clause for the United States title at Night of Champions, where every title is on the line. Stephanie McMahon reluctantly agreed, knowing Rollins will have to wrestle twice on the same night.

The show closed with Sting coming out standing next to Cena and Rollins staring at his possible fate. The double champion lost his smile, realizing he must prepare for war.

The challenge has been laid right in front of him. John Cena and Sting will be tough tests for Rollins at Night of Champions.

Let’s examine the timing of the matches. It’s more than likely he’ll face Cena first on the card.

This is the same John Cena who’s been on a roll with great matches. His losing effort against Rollins lived up to the hype of “Champion vs. Champion.”

Keep in mind that Rollins put Cena out of action up until SummerSlam due to Rollins breaking Cena’s nose. The former United States champion still remembers that.

Sting has the more intriguing motivations. He cut a promo saying how he respected Triple H for giving everything he had at their WrestleMania battle.

Sting does not feel the same way about Seth Rollins.

Sting cannot stand Rollins’ ego. He covets the title that’s eluded him over his career: the WWE world title.

A motivated Sting is dangerous for Rollins. Just ask Triple H, who almost lost to Sting at WrestleMania.

It appears Rollins will close the show against Sting at Night of Champions, which would be after facing Cena, who, as mentioned earlier, is no pushover.

Rollins’ test is carrying the fans in the palm of his hand for the night. He’s taking on two men who’ve been world champions for the last four decades combined.

It’s no easy feat to wrestle two men on the same night. Frankly, the caliber of both Sting and Cena would make anyone quiver.

Night of Champions must be where Seth Rollins needs to be at his absolute best. He must survive two wars with both his titles on the line.

If Rollins loses both, he fails. He’ll be fortunate to hold one belt after that night, let alone both.

But if anyone’s up to the challenge, it’s Seth Rollins.

Rollins has been through wars, surviving at every turn. Granted, he’s not facing the standard situation preparing for one match. Nonetheless, he is a proven champion who can hold his own in that ring.

Seth Rollins has two obstacles in his way to retaining glory. Namely, John Cena and Sting, former world champions who hunger for Rollins’ spot. Is Seth Rollins capable of answering the bell? Whether he does or not remains to be seen.
