Jason Day Comments on Relationship with Tiger Woods, Recent Success

Matt FitzgeraldSep 3, 2015

Jason Day is on absolute fire of late, winning three of his past four tournaments, including his first major at the PGA Championship. The third-ranked golfer in the world has also been leaning on a living legend in Tiger Woods to open the floodgates for his own raging success.

The two have a budding friendship, according to ESPN.com's Jason Sobel, who reported what Day had to say regarding his frequent text message conversations with Woods:

"

It's just random things. We'll be talking about finishing on Sundays and the process of stuff. His text messages, I have to digest them a little bit more, because he is very smart. And he has to kind of dumb it down to my level. ...

... He's been arguably one of the best players of all time. Who wouldn't want that mentorship from a player like that, especially on the golf course? To be able to receive text messages and ask him questions and him being so open toward me has been fantastic.

Instead of suffering a letdown following his major breakthrough at Whistling Straits, Day overcame a back injury prior to The Barclays and fired rounds of 63 and 62 on the weekend to blow the field away by six strokes.

Fox Sports' Shane Bacon did well to describe the power struggle going on atop the game of golf at the moment between Day, Jordan Spieth and Rory McIlroy:

The stakes are only increasing as Day prepares for the Deutsche Bank Championship on Friday. He has the chance to move to No. 1 in the world, but so does Spieth after missing the Barclays cut and surrendering the status back to McIlroy, who's making his FedEx Cup playoff debut of this year at TPC Boston.

Four of Day's six PGA Tour wins have come this calendar year, and the Wanamaker Trophy is only bound to give him additional confidence moving forward. Having a mentor as accomplished as Woods should help Day as well.

But competition will be fierce amid this era of parity in golf, in which at least two other superstars have distinguished themselves from the crowd of talent.

Spieth burst onto the scene by claiming the first two majors of the season. McIlroy has won two of nine official starts and will undoubtedly be eager to bounce back after an ankle injury forced him out of The Open Championship and left him too rusty to guard the Wanamaker as well as he likely could have.

Consistency is key and far easier said than done in the game of golf. Woods unlocked the secret and dominated to an extent that's arguably never been matched. Day has been flashing that type of form of late and is consulting with the right man to keep his magnificent run going.
