Floyd Mayweather Sr. Speaks on Son's Planned Retirement After Andre Berto Fight

Timothy RappSep 3, 2015

Floyd Mayweather Jr. has maintained that he will retire after facing Andre Berto on September 12. His father isn't so sure that will be the case, however.

"Myself, I can't say that Floyd is going to fight any more but I think he might fight again," he said, per EsNewsReporting.com. "If things are right for him and people are doing what they're supposed to do, it's more than likely he's going to fight. That's my belief."

He also spoke about the possibility of his son surpassing Rocky Marciano's 49-0 mark.

"I definitely think that it's a record that needs to be broken," he said. "I think Floyd can break it but I want to make sure he's ready. When I say ready, I mean he feels good and is ready to go. You can't be ready when you don't feel good."

He closed his remarks by praising his son's accomplishments and place in the sport today.

"I love everything my son has done in boxing," Mayweather said. "He controlled boxing. Boxing today is all about Floyd. He controls it right now today. Nobody else. Floyd controls boxing."

There are more reasons for Mayweather to continue fighting than for him to retire after facing Berto. The chance to go 50-0, assuming he beats Berto, and seal his legacy as the fighter with the most wins without a loss in boxing history will be very appealing to Mayweather.

But there will still be money to be made as well. Another fight against Manny Pacquiao would be another cash cow, even after the disappointment of the first fight, given Pacquiao's injury in the first fight. Marketing a rematch wouldn't be difficult.

Logically, all signs point to Mayweather continuing to fight after the Berto match. His father couldn't come out and say so definitively, but his belief that his son could fight again after September is a pretty good indication that it will happen.
