Floyd Mayweather Comments on Andre Berto, Manny Pacquiao, Career and More
With 10 days remaining until his fight against Andre Berto, Floyd Mayweather Jr. addressed the media on all aspects of his life—not just fighting.
After Michael Woods of the Sweet Science reported Money's fight against Berto for the welterweight championship of the world on July 15 (h/t SI.com), Mayweather ran into criticism for his decision.
With more acclaimed fighters willing to take Money on, such as Amir Khan (30-3, 19 KOs) and Gennady Golovkin (33-0, 30 KOs), Berto was a surprise after losing three of his past six fights.
Nate Scott of USA Today looked at this bout as a cop-out for Mayweather:
"No one expects Mayweather to lose this fight. He will win, he will go 49-0, he’ll retire. In a year, he’ll come back for one last fight, to get to that nice round 50-0 number. We all already know what’s going to happen. Mayweather knows this, which is why he doesn’t sound like a fighter right now. He sounds like a used car salesman, trying to convince us how great a deal we’re all getting.
"
On Wednesday, Mayweather began responding to the criticism rather angrily, according to ESPN's Brian Campbell.
To Mayweather, he was going to face public ire regardless of whom he chose. But he continued to defend his choice, citing the severity of his training, per ESPN.com's Dan Rafael: "It don't matter who I chose. They'll always criticize. I pushed myself more for this fight than I did for the Pacquiao fight. Any given Saturday anything can happen but I'm prepared. But I'm not going to overlook this guy."
Upon Pacquiao's reference, Mayweather didn't hesitate to take an opportunity to separate himself from the man he defeated on May 2, per RagingBabe.com:
The undefeated boxer and Leonard Ellerbe, CEO of Mayweather Promotions, also did not miss the opportunity to boast about Mayweather's endeavors outside of the ring.
Per the Sweet Science's Michael Woods:
"Floyd has received three movie offers in last week, so entertainment offers will be on his plate, says @LEllerbe. Floyd mentions a makeup line and a clothing line, as well. He wants to watch his kids get to college, too...
"
It seems that Mayweather is going to be just fine during his life after boxing. He's been doing pretty well for himself in 2015, earning $300 million in the year's first eight months, according to Forbes.com. But his reputation as a boxer would not be so fine if Berto somehow manages an upset on Sept. 12.
