WWE Night of Champions 2015: Most Controversial Moments in PPV's History
It certainly doesn't have the longevity of some WWE pay-per-views, but that doesn't mean Night of Champions is not a show that hasn't had controversy down the years.
In the brief period the show has been in existence, there have been a number of key moments which have left fans with more questions than answers.
Be it a controversial victory or the ending to a match not satisfying fans, there has been plenty for people to sink their teeth into when it comes to Night of Champions.
Will 2015 provide more controversy? That is yet to be decided, but for now, here are some of the most controversial moments we've seen in the history of Night of Champions to date.
Triple H Defeats CM Punk (2011)
1 of 4
Think back to 2011; CM Punk's name was arguably the hottest in WWE.
He had just elevated himself to the main event with that incredible promo and subsequent win in Chicago against John Cena, and soon after, he found himself feuding with the iconic Triple H.
The Summer of Punk was the hottest few months of the year, but when he lost to Alberto Del Rio at SummerSlam that year, has momentum had well and truly stalled.
By the time he was in a rivalry with Triple H, his stock had taken a bit of a hit. Not necessarily with WWE fans, but in terms of the momentum he had once enjoyed.
Their match at Night of Champions didn't help that case at all, and after being booked badly from start to finish, WWE actually gave Triple H the win instead of Punk. A victory for Punk here would have given him fresh impetus moving forward and some more momentum, but instead, the WWE's most popular star lost out to a guy who, by this point, was wrestling on a part-time basis.
It was a shocking move that upset fans all across the globe.
Del Rio Drops the Belt Way Too Quickly (2011)
2 of 4
That aforementioned Summer of Punk had seen CM Punk lose his WWE Championship to Alberto Del Rio at SummerSlam as mentioned.
And Del Rio's first job as champion was to defend it against the man whom Punk had seen off throughout that run, John Cena.
This should have been an opportunity for WWE to put some early backbone in Del Rio's run as a credible heel champion. Knock off the top guy by any means possible, and give yourself a real platform from which to build.
But instead? WWE made Del Rio tap out to Cena in the middle of the ring, a result that further established Cena as the most dominating and powerful star on the roster.
Nobody Left Happy with Cena vs. Punk (2012)
3 of 4
Most bouts involving John Cena and CM Punk throughout 2011 and 2012 were, for the most part, pretty enjoyable.
But by the time Night of Champions 2012 had rolled around and Cena was after Punk's WWE Championship once again, fans were in store for a massive, massive disappointment.
This could have been another classic from these two great rivals, but instead, WWE closed the show in hugely controversial manner: making the bout a draw in underwhelming circumstances.
It was a great match until the conclusion, which almost makes this even more frustrating and controversial. A win of any kind for either star would have at least brought the curtain down on the match in a better way than what followed at the conclusion here.
WWE inexplicably decided to have Punk and Cena pin each other at identical times, leaving the officials with no choice but to call a draw.
It was a ludicrous and absurd finish to what was a fantastic bout.
Confusion Surrounding the Finish (2014)
4 of 4
After Brock Lesnar's ruthless destruction of John Cena at SummerSlam, fans were licking their lips for the rematch and expecting something not too dissimilar.
And while Brock Lesnar's defence of the WWE World Heavyweight Championship was similarly dominant (although not quite as brutal), fans were left perplexed by the ending of the bout.
Suplex City was thrown at Cena throughout the bulk of the match, but the Cenation leader kept getting back up, much to the chagrin of the crowd in attendance.
But toward the end of the match, Cena would counter and head toward what looked to be a shocking victory. He had Lesnar locked in the STF before none other than Seth Rollins came out in the main event and interrupted proceedings.
We also got a glimpse of what would come at WrestleMania the following year, as after attacking Cena, he hit a Curb Stomp on Lesnar and informed the referee he would be cashing in his Money in the Bank briefcase.
However, the fans were left disappointed, as Cena ran him out of the ring before Lesnar in turn dropped Cena with an F-5.
The result of it all? Cena was declared the winner, but Lesnar was still the champ. A confusing end to a match that could have been a classic.
