Week Two Fantasy Football Rankings: The Must Start Club

Ray TannockSep 16, 2009

Well Week One is now in the books, and as we enter Week Two, most managers find themselves looking for the one starter that will give them a huge shot in the arm.

Week Two is interesting in the aspect that there is still a lot of rubble to sift through, with not many definites. The good news is, the definites are as solid as they come, while everyone else is still too much of a question mark to get a complete read on.

There are only two holdovers from last week: Aaron Rodgers and Adrian Peterson. But with that said, there is a brand new crop of potentials you must absolutely consider for this week.

So let’s take a look:

10. Dallas Clark—TE—Indianapolis Colts

Dallas Clark enters the mix this week thanks to the inexplicable injury suffered by Anthony Gonzalez. Obviously, Reggie Wayne is at the forefront of most people’s focus, but Manning will not just use one target against a team that historically gives the Colts a bit of trouble.

Clark should see many looks—more than his five catch performance the last time these two teams met—and he should make for a great spot play in salary cap leagues.

In addition, with Gonzalez being out for a while, he may also be worth holding onto until he returns.

9. Santana Moss—WR—Washington Redskins

Santana Moss goes up against the 25th ranked passing defense and a team that has a ton of issues covering anyone running past them. Moss otherwise is always a bit of a risk, but against the Rams he is a pretty good bet.

I like his salary cap worth beyond this point as well, since the Redskins will also face Detroit and Tampa after this matchup.

The Rams did a pretty good job containing Moss last year, but Campbell also only threw 26 passes; a number that should increase this time around.

If you already have Moss on your roster he could be primed to have a couple of good outings so keep him active and keep an eye on him

8. Tony Romo—QB—Dallas Cowboys

Tony Romo had a monster day against an inferior team last week in Tampa, but the boy simply owns New York making him a must start.

In his last three starts against the G-Men, Romo has accumulated 836 yards and a whopping 10 TD's; that’s something to take serious notice to.

Romo will also have the luxury of showcasing his talents against New York in his new digs.

If you are torn with your QB start, I say Romo will not disappoint this week, and should be started in all formats.

7. Donald Driver—WR—Green Bay Packers

OK, aside from Donald Driver claiming the win early, there is speculation Greg Jennings will not be 100 percent, and considering the Cincinnati Bengals don’t have half the pass rush that Chicago has, you can bet Driver and Rodgers will finally make some of those botched connections from a week ago a reality.

Driver is still a good start for the next two games before the bye, and he has a huge upside against a smaller coverage package offered by Cincinnati.

6. Aaron Rodgers—QB—Green Bay Packers

Well, I guess it was expected, but Aaron Rodgers will be looking to bounce back from last week’s showdown with the Chicago Bears. Rodgers was disrupted all night long, and wasn’t afforded enough protected looks to make good on any of his throws.

This week, that should all change.

The Bengals are a quick defense, but they offer little pressure on the QB, and the Packers’ O-Line should have a better time containing them than they did against Chicago making him a solid start.

Look for Rodgers to have, at the very least, 250 yards passing with a couple of TD's.

5. Clinton Portis—RB—Washington Redskins

Clinton Portis is old and has a lot of mileage, but last year he lit up the Rams like lighting illuminates the night sky—too bad the Redskins blew the game late.

This time around, Portis has less on his shoulders which means he is free to focus on what he does best: Run!

The Rams are going to have their hands full with the Redskins all day, and Portis is a pretty good start for all formats this week, and the next two weeks as well.

4. Darren McFadden—RB—Oakland Raiders

Darren McFadden showed us all last week that he has huge potential, and against the Chiefs' last ranked run defense, he should quiet anyone who still doesn’t think so.

Last year vs. the Chiefs, McFadden ran for 164 yards and a TD.

Beyond this week; however, I don’t like his chances until he possibly gets to Houston in Week Four, so if you are in a spot...use him.

Salary cap managers should avoid him all together after this week, but should get a pretty big boost as McFadden is primed for a big day.

3. The Minnesota Vikings' Defense

They play the Detroit Lions; with a rookie QB…need I say more?

2. Reggie Wayne—WR—Indianapolis Colts

The only reason why Reggie Wayne is at No. 2 is because the Miami Dolphins, as mentioned above, have been known to give Peyton Manning and the Colts some problems.

There is no mistaking Wayne is now a premier receiver, and with Gonzo out, he is needed now more than ever. In all leagues, other than salary cap, he is a must, period.

In salary cap leagues, keep one thing in mind: He is going to be very pricey, and that may not go so well if you are looking to save some of your cap room.

If you do pick him up, you’re going to have to hold onto him until the bye in Week Six. The good news is that, only Tennessee posts a challenge until then.

1. Adrian Peterson—RB—Minnesota Vikings

Pretty much everyone should have expected this as Detroit is making good on all the players in the league that should do well against them.

The defense will no doubt wreak havoc against Detroit; Brett Favre has had nothing short of success against this team, and Adrian Peterson is—well—Peterson.

He is safe to use in all formats, and for salary cap managers, he’s the top priced RB, but well worth the cap hit; just look at last week’s stats and you’ll agree.

Last Week’s Recap

Last week, Drew Brees and Peterson finished in the top five of NFL rankings, while Philip Rivers, T.J. Houshmandzadeh, Rodgers and Gates chimed in for an average and serviceable week.

Warner looked rusty, and had it not been for his two interceptions, I may be saying otherwise, while Jones and Anquan Boldin were victims of the injury bug; both of which should be fine for Week Two.

L.T. is now officially a risk after last week’s performance; I don’t think anyone saw that coming.

Good Luck this week everyone!
