Sting Deserves to Win WWE World Title at Night of Champions 2015

Donald WoodSep 2, 2015

Sting’s first WWE match ended in a shocking loss to Triple H at WrestleMania, but the wrestling legend will get another chance to show he has some fuel left in the tank when he takes on Seth Rollins at Night of Champions 2015.

Despite wrestling only one match for his new employer, Sting deserves to win the WWE World Heavyweight Championship at the September pay-per-view.

No true wrestling fan can deny the charisma and legacy of Sting after a career that spans more than 25 years. With 12 world championships—two NWA, six WCW and four TNA—few men who have graced the business have stayed relevant longer than Sting.

Without a doubt, Sting is one of the top 10 greatest wrestlers of all time. He may have wrestled in only one match as a WWE Superstar, but his place in the history of the business has already been cemented.

Seeing Sting wrestle at WWE is a huge deal for anyone who followed WCW or The Icon’s career path. Giving the 56-year-old star the world title, though, would make for one of the most unforgettable moments in not only Night of Champions history but also that of wrestling in general.

Most old-school fans never thought they’d see Sting get the chance to hold up a WWE world title.

Giving Sting the championship would also help make up for the poor booking decision of allowing Triple H to collect a win at WrestleMania 31. The storyline for that match was terrible, and WWE Creative found a way to take a slam-dunk success like Sting’s debut and make it terrible by adding New World Order and D-Generation X and allowing Sting to lose. While a world title win wouldn’t make the WWE Universe forget about the atrocious booking, it would be a start.

The poor booking continued, though, on Monday’s episode of Raw.

Instead of letting Sting go out there and cut one of his trademark promos on Rollins to build up to the marquee Night of Champions main event, the legend was simply a pawn used to get over the angle between Triple H and Rollins. For casual fans, it almost sounded like Sting was building to the eventual match between Triple H and Rollins instead of focusing on his upcoming match for the world title, proving once again that WWE Creative doesn’t have its finger on the pulse of the fanbase.

While it shouldn’t have been the focus of Sting’s promo, The Icon’s presence is the catalyst to the eventual breakup between Triple H and Rollins. The Authority has teased tension with its hand-chosen champion for months, but the comments from Sting about Triple H are driving a wedge between Rollins and The Authority. Sting is using mind games to plant the seeds of doubt, which is his job in this angle.

As for the Night of Champion main event match itself, the WWE Universe should be optimistic. Yes, Sting is 56 years old, but Rollins is arguably the best in-ring worker on the WWE roster right now. Between Sting’s ring awareness and experience telling stories in the ring and Rollins’ ability to do most of the heavy lifting in the bout, there is little doubt this will be a marquee matchup.

Regardless of whether Rollins wins or loses, though, standing toe-to-toe with a legend like Sting will help get Rollins over with the fans. If a face turn is imminent, then allowing Rollins to hang with a bona fide legend like Sting would give him the ultimate rub.

The hope is that Sting and Rollins put on a great match that keeps the fans in attendance at Night of Champions enthralled. If Sting earns the win and holds the one prize he has never held in his career, the moment will be unforgettable. In true WWE fashion, though, the celebration must be short-lived, as Sheamus could hit the ring and successfully cash in his Money in the Bank contract.

Not only would it take the title off a 56-year-old man who shouldn’t be carrying the belt for a long period of time, but it would also build sympathy for Rollins, who would be cast aside as The Authority shows its support for the new world champion.

This outcome would set up a Triple Threat championship match at Hell in a Cell in October and lay the groundwork for Rollins’ turn and eventual matchup against Triple H, likely at WrestleMania 32. Two title changes in one night would also ensure that no wrestling fan ever forgets the conclusion to the 2015 edition of Night of Champions.

There are many reasons why a legend like Sting deserves to win the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. From his legacy in the business as a 12-time champion to his longevity as a top star in the industry to the need for a title change in the storyline, the September PPV is the perfect opportunity to create an incredible moment.
