Summer Transfer Window 2015: Full List of Deals Struck on Deadline Day

Matt JonesSep 1, 2015

Former England international defender Gary Neville said in 2012 that those sides still scouring the transfer market on the final day of the window are “badly run football clubs.” So perhaps Premier League teams are finally getting the gist of how to conduct their summer business, as Tuesday’s deadline day passed without too much incident to speak of.

There were some big deals that pushed the total spent by Premier League clubs in this window up to a staggering £870 million, per BBC Sport. However, there were few major shocks before Tuesday's cutoff. Certainly no last-day lunges into the market to compare with the signings of Robinho, Dimitar Berbatov or Radamel Falcao in years gone by.

Anthony Martial—Monaco to Manchester United

There’s no doubting that Manchester United needed to add to their attacking options in the final embers of the window and by signing Anthony Martial they have done exactly that. But there were plenty of eyebrows raised in the build-up to the Red Devils finalising a switch for the former Monaco man.

After all, an initial fee of £36 million is a staggering amount to pay for a 19-year-old, the most ever for a teenage footballer. But as we can see here courtesy of OptaJoe, there are promising early signs when it comes to the player:

Martial has all the attributes to go to the very top of the game. Blessed with searing pace, intelligent movement and a cool head in front of goal, he’s a wonderful player to watch at his best and someone who will add a new dimension to this United team. But as is the case with any teenager, he’s still a bit green.

Bleacher Report’s Sam Tighe took a look at how he’s likely to fare at Old Trafford:

It means that although he’s a marquee capture and although he’ll don the iconic No. 9 jersey, the teenager can’t be relied upon to be a talisman yet. However, given United’s scarcity of attacking options, Martial seems set to play a key role and have a significant impact on the team’s season, as James Robson of the Manchester Evening News noted:

The Frenchman seems like a confident young man, but playing under the bright lights of Old Trafford after such a lucrative transfer brings its own enormous pressures. If he can cope with them and make an impact of sorts this season, Martial will be delighted, but he’s certainly not the man to fire the Red Devils to glory quite yet.

Virgil van Dijk—Celtic to Southampton

After missing out on Toby Alderweireld to Tottenham Hotspur earlier in the window, Southampton have been on the lookout for a defender and in Virgil van Dijk, they may have pulled off one of the coups of the summer.

The former Celtic man has been the standout performer in Scotland for a while now, with the league often looking a little too easy for him. As Phil McNulty of BBC Sport noted here, the Premier League will be a major step up for the Dutchman:

Van Dijk seems to have what it takes to thrive, though. He’s not only an accomplished distributor of the ball, but a player who is superb at spotting danger and timing tackles. The Dutchman relishes the physical battle too, something he will get plenty of in English football’s unforgiving top flight.

The Premier League will be a big step up for Van Dijk.

As an added bonus, the centre-back also chips in with plenty of goals, whether it be via his dangerous free-kicks or attacking set pieces himself. Squawka Football provided Van Dijk's impressive goalscoring figures for Celtic:

Saints needed a defender of his calibre to come in and Ronald Koeman will be delighted to have gotten his compatriot on board. There is likely to be a period of adaptation and Van Dijk will have to adjust his game slightly to cope with some of the best attacking players in the world, but the 24-year-old is a player ready to make the step up in class.
