Hey, WWE, What Are You Doing to Randy Orton?
The WWE has been building Randy Orton up over the last several months as the top heel in the company. He has feuded with and “sidelined” several big names, including Triple H, Batista, and Vince McMahon.
All that work has evaporated over the course of 48 hours.
On Sunday night, Orton lost his title to John Cena at Breaking Point. The fact that Orton lost his title is not the problem; it’s that he lost it in a match he had no chance of winning; an “I Quit” match.
Of course the WWE wants to put the belt on Cena because he is the company’s biggest asset, but making Orton lose to him in that sort of match makes him look very weak. We all knew that there was no chance Cena would lose in this match because Superman never gives up.
Orton should have dropped the title at Summerslam or held on to it to the Hell in a Cell Pay Per View; this was the worst way for the WWE to take the belt off of him.
Then the WWE follows this up by delivering what was a glorified squash match on Monday night. Look, in terms of the storyline, it was obvious that when Batista returned he would get his revenge on Orton. But why book it the night after Orton quit in his match?
In what ended up being about a five-minute match, I believe Orton executed three moves. Am I the only one who sees a problem with that? You can have Batista win the match but at least let Orton get in SOME offense.
Now, some might say this might lead to a storyline that could ultimately spell the end of Legacy; as Rhodes and Dibiase (surprisingly) won their match at Breaking Point. Perhaps they begin to think they no longer need Orton because he has been struggling to beat Cena.
If that is what the WWE decides to do, I think it would be incredibly foolish. They took the best thing about Monday Night Raw and turned him into a joke overnight.
