Tavern Talk: What QBs Will be Left Standing? - by Mike Lombardi

Michael LombardiSep 16, 2009

National Football Post

Here’s the question of the day: What quarterbacks, who are currently starting now, will be starting at the end of the year? Sure, it’s easy to say goodbye to Jake Delhomme after his recent bad outing, but who else might be in danger?

Here’s a list of opening day starters in the NFL:

Arz   Kurt Warner: Looked rusty in Week One; needs to show he’s still great Sunday.

Atl   Matt Ryan: Every time I watch him, I think he’s a blue. Every time.

APJoe Flacco

Bal   Joe Flacco: Another week like the last one and he’s a blue.

Buf   Trent Edwards: I strongly doubt he’ll be left standing at the end of the season.

Car   Jake Delhomme: Not many options in Carolina. If things don’t improve before October, he won’t celebrate Halloween as the starter.

Chi   Jay Cutler: Bad first outing, but he’s good. He just needs to play within the system, not force the system.

Cin   Carson Palmer: Something’s wrong. The Bengals’ offense isn’t moving well—is Palmer really 100 percent healthy?

Cle   Brady Quinn: It took all of camp to make him the starter, so anything is possible.

Dal   Tony Romo: No chance unless an unforeseen injury happens.

Den   Kyle Orton: He has to play better than last week. He was injured so that might be the reason.

Det   Matthew Stafford: Going to get better every week. All he needs to do is stay healthy.

APAaron Rodgers

GB   Aaron Rodgers: Going to be great this year.

Hou   Matt Schaub: Sorry, Matt “I love me some Texans” Bowen. Schaub won’t stay healthy.

Ind   Peyton Manning: Never happen.

Jax   David Garrard: Played well in Week One, but with two rookie tackles, he’ll take some hits.

K.C.   Matt Cassell: Already missed Week One, and with this offensive line, the injury bug might be a problem.

Mia   Chad Pennington: Chad Henne is breathing down his neck. Might happen sooner than later.

Min   Brett Favre: Four sacks in Week One to a team that only had 17 all of last year. He’s 39-years-old. You do the math.

N.E.   Tom Brady: No chance.

N.O.   Drew Brees: Another no chance. By the way, he’s fun to watch even if you’re not a Saints fan.

NYG   Eli Manning: Another no chance.

NYJ   Mark Sanchez: Like Stafford, he’s going to be very good with each rep. Must stay healthy all year.

Oak   JaMarcus Russell: He’ll take some hits and might get beat up, but he’s going to be given every chance to be the main guy.

APDonovan McNabb

Phil   Donovan McNabb: Unless too many injuries get him down.

Pit   Ben Roethlisberger: Big Ben takes some sacks, and if he’s not there at the end, the Steelers won’t be in the hunt.

SD   Philip Rivers: Injury only.

Sea   Matt Hasselbeck: Injury only, and that’s very possible based on his durability.

SF   Shaun Hill: Wild card here. He doesn’t always look good, but he can run this very basic offense.

Stl   Marc Bulger: With the first selection in the 2010 draft, the St. Louis Rams select…Sam Bradford.

TB   Byron Leftwich: I think he’s keeping the seat warm for Josh Freeman, which the rookie might occupy by Week 10.

Ten   Kerry Collins: Unless he gets hurt. He played well the other night in one of his better games. Looks much quicker.

Wash   Jason Campbell: No chance if the 'Skins don’t find a way to make big plays.

Who do you guys think?
