Arsenal Transfer News: Latest on Edinson Cavani, Adrien Rabiot, Marco Verratti

Tom SunderlandAug 31, 2015

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has been turned down in his attempts to make a last-gasp lunge for the services of Paris Saint-Germain trio Edinson Cavani, Marco Verratti and Adrien Rabiot.

The Telegraph's Jeremy Wilson reported Wenger "received little encouragement" regarding his enquiries for the Parc des Princes players, adding the French tactician is content with his options at centre-forward.

Uruguay striker Cavani will have been viewed by many Arsenal fans as the most coveted of the three mentioned players, one who could offer a world-class touch in front of goal at the Emirates Stadium.

Oliver Holt of the Mail On Sunday agrees another forward is the priority for Wenger, and with goalkeeper Petr Cech still Arsenal's only major signing of the summer window so far, a title challenge may go astray:

Instead, it appears likely Olivier Giroud will once again be the man to lead the north Londoners forward, although ESPN FC's Miguel Delaney doesn't rate the France international too highly:

Cavani's position at PSG has been viewed as vulnerable in the past due to Zlatan Ibrahimovic's reign as Laurent Blanc's leading man in attack, with the former pushed out to the flanks as a result.

However, Cavani scored twice to lead his club to a 3-0 hammering of Monaco on Sunday, with BT Sport showing Blanc's winger-reliant system to be of great benefit to the instinctive poacher:

Rabiot will be looked upon as the more attainable of the two central midfielders considering he almost ran down his previous contract last year before signing an extension in the French capital.

The Daily Mail's Sami Mokbel reports Rabiot has been "watched extensively" by Arsenal scouts, while Goal's Robin Bairner recently outlined just how crucial a component Verratti is to Blanc:

Central midfield has been discussed at length as an area in need of reinforcements for Wenger. Between Jack Wilshere's recurring injury woes and the declining form of Mikel Arteta and Mathieu Flamini, new blood is required.

Francis Coquelin cut his loan spell at Charlton Athletic short to return to Arsenal earlier in 2015, emerging as a surprise hero of the 2014-15 campaign in deep midfield.

However, 22-year-old Verratti is an altogether more elite figure and brings with him a wealth of Champions League and international experience, and he made 28 Ligue 1 starts for PSG last season.

His style of possession-heavy play would translate easily to the Gunners' approach, too, after Squawka highlighted his metronomic influence during Sunday's win over Monaco:

Securing the signing of 20-year-old Rabiot would be the most realistic pursuit after he was sent off within 28 minutes of making his first Ligue 1 appearance of the season.

Following that disappointment, Bleacher Report's Jonathan Johnson quoted French newspaper Le Parisien criticising the player, insinuating a certain negativity comes hand-in-hand with any good he might bring:

Rabiot performed a 360-degree turn to sign a new four-and-a-half-year contract at Parc des Princes last year, evidence PSG have renewed faith in his prospects and the talent he could become.

With so little time left in the transfer window, it's difficult to see Arsenal cutting a deal for any of PSG's stars, each of whom are held in a certain regard by their current employers.

Fans of the north London club will be encouraged by the optimism and intent shown by their side, but without much end product to show for their transfer troubles, the summer window could end up looking like a bust.
