The Frenchman expressed his delight at joining the Premier League outfit, while Red Devils boss Louis van Gaal praised his new striker via their official Twitter feed:
The 19-year-old is regarded as one of the top attacking talents in France, along with the likes of Alexandre Lacazette and Nabil Fekir. Those two blocked his path to Lyon's starting XI, which is what prompted his move to Monaco when the club gained promotion to Ligue 1 in 2013.
As noted by Vadim Vasilyev, vice-president of the principality side, United dramatically upped their offer to secure Martial's future. Vasilyev's comments were reported by the Sun (h/t Sky Sports):
"Initially Martial was not for sale, it was absolutely not planned. Since last week United started to make offers which we declined several times–£21.6m, £28.8m, £36m, even £50.4m with bonuses.
On Sunday the player got such an offer that he couldn't have declined. He asked us to find a solution and on Monday morning Manchester United made an offer to Monaco which the club couldn't refuse.
It's absolutely unique. Its the price of Luis Suarez or Neymar–the best players in the world.
"
Martial is a raw prospect with huge potential. He's capable of playing out wide, but he's at his best when he plays as a striker. In many ways, he's similar to Lacazette, although he relies less on his athleticism and more on his excellent vision and finishing ability.
French football writer Francois Piraux is a big fan:
United's forwards have struggled early in the 2015-16 season, and after four Premier League matches, the club has scored just three goals. Veteran striker Wayne Rooney is still shaking off the rust, and with Javier Hernandez leaving United for Bayer Leverkusen, some competition and depth up front was needed.
Fans may remember Martial from his strong showing against Arsenal in last year's UEFA Champions League, where he showed his ability to present a strong target and assisted Dimitar Berbatov. Last season in Ligue 1, he scored nine goals in 19 starts, according to WhoScored.com.
The keyword when talking about Martial is "potential." At 19 years old, he's far from a finished product, and there are plenty of flaws to his game―most notably his lack of touch and reluctance to do any defensive work.
There's no denying United are paying a ton of money for a relatively unproven striker, and many fans will question this move. Martial is probably not going to start a lot of matches in the 2015-16 season, and judging by his scoring record so far in his young career, he's not going to magically solve United's scoring woes, either.
Football journalist Rafael Hernandez is sceptical of the move:
"Doesn’t make sense to pay so much for a teenager, Martial hasn’t shown anything that could warrant more than €10m, let alone €80m.
— Rafael Hernández (@RafaelH117) September 1, 2015"
His upside and potential are very real, however, and that's what United are paying for.
BeIN Sports' Matteo Bonetti also believes the youngster possesses great potential:
As shared by OptaJean, he was recently called up to the French national team for the first time, and given the absurd amount of talent Les Bleus have up front―Lacazette, Fekir, Karim Benzema and Olivier Giroud, to name a few―it's a testament to how good he already is, not how good he may become:
Monaco are making a hefty profit on Martial, which became necessary after the club was hit with UEFA financial-fair-play sanctions, as reported by Sky Sports. But Martial was always going to leave for a team that could give him a chance to prove himself at the highest level.
How he deals with the pressure of such a hefty transfer fee will be key to his development in the next few years, and while he has all of the physical tools to succeed in the Premier League, we're about to find out whether he has the mental fortitude as well.
Patience will be key here, and if the Red Devils can nurture him in the right way, that massive transfer fee may be justified in just a few years.
