Chelsea Transfer News: Ezequiel Garay 'Not for Sale,' John Obi Mikel Rumours
Chelsea's efforts to land a world-class centre-back have been stunted after Zenit St. Petersburg told the Blues that Ezequiel Garay is not for sale, while Besiktas have raised their interest in fringe midfielder John Obi Mikel.
According to Jason Burt of the Telegraph, Russian Premier League champions Zenit have no interest in selling their Argentina international, who has long been linked with a move to the Premier League.

Burt details Garay is an alternative for Jose Mourinho's side should they be unsuccessful in their bid to land Everton's John Stones, who handed in a transfer request on Monday, per ESPN, as he seeks to secure a move away.
Milanese journalist Tancredi Palmeri hints the Russian links shared between Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich and Garay's current employers may benefit the Premier League champions in their pursuit:
While that may be the case, Zenit boast substantial spending power of their own and, with four years remaining on Garay's current deal, will feel no unnecessary pressure to cash in on their star.
Mourinho is seeking a long-term successor to Stamford Bridge veteran John Terry, who Bleacher Report's Sam Tighe recently discussed as a declining force in the English top flight:
Terry was sent off in last weekend's 3-2 win at West Bromwich Albion just a week after being substituted off during Chelsea's 3-0 defeat to Manchester City, with Gary Cahill and Kurt Zouma his current deputies.
The Guardian's Dominic Fifield says a fourth offer worth up to £40 million will be made for Stones, but Garay could work out as the more financially viable option:
At least in the short term, that is, with England international Stones possessing a great deal of potential, while 28-year-old Garay is already coming upon his prime playing years in St. Petersburg.
Zenit may put up a fight to keep the South American brute, but Chelsea have succeeded in surpassing such barriers in the past.
Besiktas Switch Midfield Attention to Mikel

After missing out on the services of Liverpool anchor Lucas Leiva, Turkish side Besiktas have switched their attention to Chelsea's John Obi Mikel.
The Guardian's Emre Sarigul wrote for Turkish-Football.com, where he cites Turkish newspaper Milliyet as reporting the Black Eagles are looking to loan Mikel with an option to buy.
That speculation is contrary to another report mentioned in Sarigul's report, where Nigerian newspaper Punch says Besiktas are looking to cut a €5 million permanent deal for the player.

It could represent the much-anticipated exit of a player who has spent the last few seasons firmly on Chelsea's sidelines, rarely utilised as more than a late substitution used to see out settled results.
Mikel made 26 appearances for the Blues across all competitions last season, 13 of which were starts, representing a steep decline from his forgotten status as such a valued member of the team.
Despite that fall from grace, Mikel could offer Besiktas a great deal of winning experience as the BBC's Oluwashina Okeleji outlines his medal-winning record since arriving in west London nine years ago:
Cesc Fabregas and Nemanja Matic appear likely to dominate the Chelsea engine room once again this season, while the club also has the likes of Ramires, Oscar and Zouma as back-up options.
Mikel has two years remaining on his current Chelsea contract, but the promise of more first-team action in Istanbul may appeal to the Nigeria international.
