Samoa Joe, TakeOver: Brooklyn and Latest WWE NXT Developmental News

Ryan DilbertAug 26, 2015

Buzz built as WWE NXT traveled to Brooklyn, the latest TakeOver being the center of the week's developmental news. Even Samoa Joe working with the WWE main roster didn't get much attention with there being so much talk about Saturday's live special.

Joe chose his teammate wisely as he traveled with the WWE roster on Tuesday. His opportunity to be a part of WWE proper, even for just a non-televised bout, is noteworthy.

The same is true for the latest word on the reported botched ending to a match taped in New York. Other NXT news touches on prospects' pay bonuses and a tag team tournament being on its way.

When it comes time for that tourney to kick off, hopefully Joe is there to clamp down one of his submission holds on the competition.

Backstage Word on Poor Match Ending

1 of 5

A Fatal 4-Way set to air on Wednesday's NXT apparently went awry. Becky Lynch, Charlotte, Emma and Dana Brooke all went to battle in a match WWE taped on Saturday at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

The word is that the ending did not go as planned.

Dave Meltzer wrote on F4WOnline's Monday update:

"

The finish was botched as Lynch was not supposed to be pinned, but she didn't kick out.  The impression we were given is that she was supposed to be saved by one of the heels and the person who was to save her wasn't there. The ref, doing his job, counted the pin as that is WWE rules.

"

If the mistake is Brooke's, this will hurt her progress. She's already flubbed a few moments in her matches, and this incident will further point to her not being ready for the spot that she's in right now.

It sounds as if some blame belongs to Lynch as well. She has to kick out in that spot if no one is there in time to break up the pin. While not a huge deal, this kind of blown ending is certainly not something these women want on their resume more than once.

WWE Announces NXT Tag Team Tournament

2 of 5

A tournament honoring Dusty Rhodes is on its way. NXT general manager William Regal made the announcement on Saturday's TakeOver event.

The finals of the tourney, dubbed "The Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic," will air on a live special on Oct. 7. Bobby Melok wrote on WWE.com that it "will feature the best of NXT’s past, present and future, duking it out for tag team supremacy."

Many fans may remember Rhodes for his singles run, but he first established himself in a team with Dick Murdoch and also wrestled alongside Andre The Giant, Dick Slater and others.

This is a classy move to salute The American Dream. It also makes for great entertainment. The tournament format is used too little in WWE.

NXT Talent Reportedly Not Getting Gate Bonuses

3 of 5

NXT moved out of Full Sail University and into the Barclays Center. Despite selling out the latter, much larger venue, there reportedly won't be any change in how talent is paid.

At the main-roster level, wrestlers get bonus checks for pay-per-view events. That's not the case here it seems.

According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter (h/t Wrestling Inc), despite the larger gates of recent events, NXT prospects are not receiving a percentage. The reported reason is that WWE's developmental territory operates at a loss.

That may be true when putting on shows at Full Sail that only houses a few hundred people, but that can't possibly be the case when using an arena that sits over 15,000.

The NXT model is changing. It's not just a developmental brand anymore, it's a WWE spinoff featuring names like Samoa Joe, Rhyno and on Saturday night, Jushin "Thunder" Liger. And the show is going on the road more, filling out places like the Barclays Center.

The pay system has to evolve as well then.

NXT Stars Team Up for SmackDown Dark Match

4 of 5

Finn Balor and Samoa Joe is the kind of team NXT would dream up. For one night, though, it was a reality.

Balor and Joe traveled with the main roster for Tuesday's SmackDown taping. As listed on ProFightDB.com, the two worked a dark match against The Lucha Dragons.

If that's a sign of either man making a move to the main roster soon, there's reason to celebrate. Both wrestlers would energize the roster, creating a whole new of set of fresh, compelling matchups for WWE to put together.

If this is instead a preview of them teaming together for the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic, that's good news too.

TakeOver: Brooklyn

5 of 5

NXT TakeOver: Brooklyn gave fans a number of things to talk about. That goes beyond the Match of the Year candidate in Sasha Banks vs. Bayley, Apollo Crews' debut and two title changes.

For one, Japanese star Kana showed up in the crowd. WWE acknowledged her presence, but when putting her name on the screen, spelled it wrong (Kanna).

WWE doesn't usually point out wrestlers from other promotions like that unless it plans on signing them so that's something certainly to keep abreast of.

Another two noteworthy guests were there as well. In his notes on TakeOver, PWInsider's Mike Johnson reported, "WWNLive's Gabe Sapolsky and Sal Hamaoui are in town and backstage at the WWE NXT Takeover:Brooklyn event, likely to continue discussions about their potential working relationship with NXT."

WWE working out some kind of talent exchange deal with the World Wrestling Network would be huge. It would represent a significant change in philosophy and make NXT feel even more like a super indy promotion.

And the TakeOver event did well in terms of buzz on the Internet. In the F4WOnline Monday update, Dave Meltzer noted that "NXT Takeover was the No. 2 trending topic in Japan on Twitter at one point." Meltzer also wrote on Sunday, "On twitter, there were 192,000 mentions of NXT, 58,400 for SummerSlam, 7,705 for Sasha Banks and 4,120 for Samoa Joe."
