Fans may have forgotten Marin still played for the club, disappearing into relative obscurity after a promising start. Moving to Stamford Bridge in 2012, he showed flashes of his potential during his first season with the club before moving to Sevilla on loan the following campaign.
The German made just 10 La Liga starts for Sevilla―per WhoScored.com―and spent the first half of the 2014-15 season on the bench with Fiorentina. He subsequently moved to Belgian side Anderlecht, who declined to use the option to purchase the player outright.
ESPN FC's John Brewin shared an image of the player after he landed in Turkey, courtesy of Turkish-Football.com, while sharing a few melancholy words:
When it comes to the Germany international's career, the words “what could have been” seem apt. Marin arrived at Chelsea as an explosive, versatile forward who could also play in midfield, and while his scoring record never looked particularly impressive, he showed the potential to be an excellent winger capable of helping out in a variety of ways.
Injuries took their toll on Marin, dating all the way back to his days with Werder Bremen (via Transfermarkt.co.uk).
The fact he was a flop, even at Anderlecht, a young side that was desperate for strong attacking play toward the end of last season, is telling. Marin doesn't resemble the player he was three years ago in any way, and he'll have his work cut out for him in order to resurrect his career at Trabzonspor.
