Arsenal Transfer News: Thierry Henry Demands Signing Amid Edinson Cavani Rumours

Gianni VerschuerenAug 24, 2015

Arsenal legend Thierry Henry believes his former club needs to make several more signings before the end of the summer transfer window, amid rumours the Gunners are eyeing up a move for Paris Saint-Germain's Edinson Cavani.

As reported by MailOnline's Jack Bezants, Henry commented on the situation after his former club's goalless draw against Liverpool on Monday, saying:

"I think it is going to be a massive week. Are they going to buy someone up front or in the middle of the park? They were missing a lot of players tonight, they still need a holding midfielder and they still need a striker. We have been saying it since the beginning of the season."

Liverpool and Arsenal combined for an astonishing 33 shots but failed to convert any of their chances, and it marked the first time since that 1999 a match between these two sides ended without any goals, per Jacqui Oatley of ITV and BBC.

The Gunners have been linked with a move for Real Madrid's Karim Benzema all summer long, as manager Arsene Wenger is reportedly keen on boosting the striker position, but on Monday, Wenger admitted the story was “dead” and the France international wouldn't be joining, via Goal's Sam Lee.

And according to the Daily Mail's Sami Mokbel, Arsenal have turned their attention to Cavani, with Wenger reportedly “desperate” to add a proven, world-class striker before the end of the transfer window.

The 28-year-old Uruguay international has yet to find the back of the net in three Ligue 1 matches this season, having started every match for PSG as the lone striker while Zlatan Ibrahimovic recovers from a knee injury, per Goal.

Cavani was regarded as one of the world's top up-and-coming strikers before moving to the French capital in 2013, but while he's remained relatively productive for Les Parisiens, he's failed to live up to the lofty expectations the French champions had for him.

According to WhoScored, his scoring numbers have taken a hit the past two years, as he's failed to hit the 20-goal mark in each of his past Ligue 1 seasons. The drop can partly be explained by PSG's choice to play Cavani in a wide role at times, allowing Ibrahimovic to play in his preferred position through in the centre of the pitch.

Cavani was at his best when he was the star man with the Partenopei, and Bleacher Report's James McNicholas believes he could return to his best form at the Emirates:

"

A move for Cavani would be a fascinating prospect. The Uruguayan has not quite lived up to expectations in Ligue 1 since joining from Napoli, seemingly cowed by the presence of Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

At Arsenal, Cavani would surely be the main man once again. Although Arsene Wenger has three good attacking options in Olivier Giroud,Theo Walcott and Danny Welbeck, Cavani has the capacity to combine the best of their attributes. He’s an all-rounder: a forward with speed, power and superb finishing ability.

"

PSG won't sell their prized asset for pennies on the dollar, having paid £55 million for his services just two years ago, per Mokbel. With Ibrahimovic entering the final year of his contract, the club won't be eager to part ways with Cavani, via ESPN FC's Ian Holyman.

The Uruguayan may be willing to start the next chapter of his footballing career, however, and relish the opportunity to show he's still a world-class forward, as long as he's placed in the right system.

Only time will tell whether that's in north London, but as Henry pointed out on Monday, Arsenal's need for another striker is glaring. And with the end of the summer transfer window fast approaching, there's not much time left to go looking at alternatives.
