WWE SummerSlam 2015 Results: Top Takeaways from Latest PPV Event
A night of confusion and disappointment at WWE SummerSlam has left fans wondering what's next for some of the company's biggest stars.
It's important to point out that there were some big positives on the night, but a controversial finish to the main event and some generally disappointing matches in the middle of the card did little to send the show off with a bang.
WWE fans will be looking to see how the key storylines move forward with Night of Champions now the next show on the horizon—and how some of the mistakes are addressed and rectified.
But with the dust still settling from SummerSlam and a chaotic night in Brooklyn, let's examine what the top takeaways from the show were.
An Underwhelming Bulk of the Card
1 of 4
It's disappointing to write, let alone witness.
Sadly, the majority of bouts at SummerSlam this year were completely, and utterly, underwhelming.
There were high points of course—but a fair proportion of the card featured lame endings and little for WWE fans to get excited about in the future.
A prime example? Dolph Ziggler vs. Rusev. It was a chance for one man to go over, and an opportunity for WWE to focus on the men in the feud rather than Lana vs. Summer Rae. But instead of that, we got a ridiculous double count-out and a scuffle between all four participants afterward.
The Intercontinental Championship match also offered little in the way of excitement and genuine tension. That is one area WWE really needs to focus on moving forward—throw some serious talent into the IC Title picture, because the belt—and probably Ryback himself—deserves better.
All in all, there was a lot of food for thought for Creative heading out of SummerSlam.
The New Day Are Deserved Kings of the Tag Division
2 of 4
But amidst all the bad of SummerSlam, it should be noted that one of WWE's biggest success stories at the moment managed to further solidify themselves as a top stable.
Turning The New Day heel was just about the only move left for the group after a disastrous start as a babyface group. Even then, you felt that their days as a trio were numbered.
But not only have they managed to survive, they have continued to thrive as the weeks roll on.
And they finally—and deservedly—got their hands back on the WWE Tag Team Championships at SummerSlam, confirming themselves as the undisputed kings of tag wrestling.
They have it all—the annoying chant that fans have now grown to love, the charisma from Xavier Woods and the in-ring ability of Big E and Kofi Kingston.
And what about Big E's funky dancing at the end of every win? Right now, The New Day most definitely does rock.
Celebrity Involvement Proves to Be a Success
3 of 4
Celebrity involvement in a WWE ring can often go one of two ways.
Usually it's an unmitigated disaster with said celebrity looking completely out of their depth—but when it works, it's refreshing and great to see.
After all, celebrity involvement is a key facet of getting new fans watching WWE shows, people who—unlike us—aren't wrestling fans.
Jon Stewart and Stephen Amell both took their chance on the night at SummerSlam and were a big hit. Amell especially stood out while teaming up with Neville to beat Stardust and King Barrett—a feud that may well continue.
Amell sold his bumps really well and looked in great shape, and he actually seemed to fit into the dynamic of the match really well.
And Stewart? We almost certainly knew when he came down that he was going to floor Cena and turn in the process after his mini-spat with Seth Rollins earlier in the year.
But it produced one of the feel-good moments of the night, with genuine excitement and buzz in the air when Rollins scored the winning pinfall.
THAT Ending...
4 of 4
Clearly, the massive elephant in the room heading out of SummerSlam was the finish to Brock Lesnar vs. Undertaker.
It's going to get a lot of negative publicity for the way it was handled—and perhaps some of it is deserved. After all, there was no conclusive winner in the end, especially when WWE opted to play replays over and over again to show Undertaker's deceptive method to win.
But to look at it from a different angle, it does at least set things up nicely for another match somewhere down the line—maybe WrestleMania 32.
Sure, it ends Lesnar's long run without a loss in WWE, but the manner of the defeat does at least make him look as strong as possible after a loss.
And Undertaker? The efforts of WWE to put him over as a serious heel—despite fans still cheering for him—won't get much stronger than this. The low blow, the deceptive cheating to win—it was all classic heel, and if it's addressed properly on Raw tonight, it could turn out to be something positive.
But fans were definitely left confused after the result—something you shouldn't be getting from a show like SummerSlam.
