LLWS 2015: TV Coverage, Live Stream Schedule, Predictions for Monday's Bracket

Nate LoopAug 24, 2015

The 2015 Little League World Series is set for another round of elimination games on Monday, with four more teams set to be culled from the competition, leaving an elite eight in contention.

Every team playing on Monday is 1-1 thus far in this double-elimination competition, save for the Dominican Republic and Wilshire-Riverside, Oregon, who are 0-2 and playing in a consolation game.

For the teams that do win and survive Monday's culling, the celebrations will only last 24 hours or so before their LLWS tickets are on the line again. Tuesday sees those winners square off in yet another set of elimination games for the right to remain in contention along the four as-yet undefeated teams: Japan, Pearland West, Red Land and Venezuela.

Red Land is a team to look out for coming from Pennsylvania and owning a home-state advantage. The young players even got a visit from their governor on Sunday, per Little League:

Red Land rewarded its followers with a wild, walk-off 9-8 win over Northwood, South Carolina.

Game to Watch

Chinese Taipei vs. Uganda

Chinese Taipei vs. Uganda is the game to watch on Monday, even if it's more about sentiment than actual competitiveness. It's a matchup between the Little League World Series' most successful country and a nation not only fairly new to the annual tournament in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, but to the sport of baseball itself.

Young representatives from Chinese Taipei have won the LLWS a record 17 times, although the last win was in 1996. In that time, Japan has emerged as the dominant nation from Asia.

It was indeed the Tokyo Kitasuna squad that defeated Tung Yuan Little League 7-5 in the opening round, putting Chinese Taipei on the brink immediately. A strong showing against the global powerhouse carried over into a dominant 16-4 win over Canada on Saturday, setting up the match against Uganda. The fans were pumped by the result, per Little League:

It's only Uganda's second appearance in the LLWS, but the kids from AVRS Secondary School have already achieved a huge milestone for their country in defeating the Dominican Republic 4-1 to open the tournament. It was the first non-consolation victory for Uganda (and by extension, the African continent) at the Little League World Series.

It was a win that made this pre-tournament statement from Richard Stanley, a key contributor to the rise of baseball in Uganda, seem a little less out of reach, per Vice Sports' Joseph Swide: "Eventually, Uganda will long surpass the Dominican Republic as far as number and quality of [baseball] players."

The good vibes would be relatively short-lived, however, as Uganda ran into a tough Venezuela team on Sunday and lost 7-0. Uganda stood little chance against Luis Castillo's excellent pitching, per Little League:

The loss only served to demonstrate how much farther Uganda has to go before it can rival the powerful teams steeped in baseball tradition. On Monday, this disparity will likely make itself known yet again.

Chinese Taipei is primed to win this contest with its so-far superior performances at the plate. Scoring five runs against Japan is no simple feat, and the team hit four home runs in its drubbing of Canada. Wei Hung Chou was the star of that contest, going 3-for-3 at the plate with two home runs, one of them a grand slam. Chinese Taipei also has a day of rest over its Ugandan opposition, although that might not matter so much for energetic pre-teens.

Uganda may again be looking to Francis Alemo for inspiration. He pitched well against the Dominican Republic but also demonstrated he can take care of business in the batter's box, knocking in two RBI in that contest.

Aside from any expected geographical or national allegiances, Uganda is the team to root for as it blazes a trail for other African nations to follow. Plus, who doesn't love a good underdog story? A win would be a huge thrill not only for the team, but might also send a jolt through the tournament. It could also pique greater interest in the nation.

Stanley has plans for Uganda beyond Williamsport, according to Swide: "Stanley hopes to one day bring MLB scouts to Uganda. He says he's been told by contacts within MLB that scouts will make the trip to Uganda if he can gather 150 kids near the age of 15 who know how to play. It's not so far fetched to think that Stanley can do this. He's already accomplished so much."

Of course, Chinese Taipei winning would be swell as well. Chou and company showed great spirit against Japan after going down 6-0 early. South Korea managed to win the entire competition in 2014; a long-dormant Chinese Taipei might be talented enough to forge a similar path this year.
