WWE SummerSlam 2015: Match Card, Potential Spoilers, Predictions and More

Ryan DilbertAug 22, 2015

Brock Lesnar will send Undertaker back into the darkness from which he came at WWE SummerSlam 2015.

A pair of future Hall of Famers headline what WWE has taken to calling "The WrestleMania of the Summer." It's a rematch over a year-and-a-half in the making and one that won't end with the antihero in the wide-brimmed hat celebrating.

SummerSlam has been a showcase of Lesnar's dominance in the recent past. In Brooklyn, New York, on Sunday, that will hold true once more.

He and The Deadman close out a blockbuster pay-per-view that also includes a champion vs. champion match, a meeting of the Divas division's three stables and a four-way scrum over the tag team titles.

It's an event that may feature even more star power than Undertaker and Stephen Amell of Arrow fame. Rumors point to the possibility of some big names from the past showing up at the Barclays Center as well.

News, Potential Spoilers

Roman Reigns and Dean Ambrose fans have reason to be confident heading into SummerSlam. Officials were reportedly leaning toward making them the victors on Sunday.

According to F4WOnline (h/t Wrestling Inc), WWE, at one point at least, planned to have Reigns and Ambrose win their SummerSlam bout.

Keep in mind that this report is more than one week old. That's plenty of time for WWE's decision-makers to have a change of heart.

As to whether Amell will show up as the Green Arrow, a Facebook post from the actor who plays him on TV provides a hint. Amell posted a Facebook video about heading off to SummerSlam where he held up his costume from Arrow and said, "You didn't think I was coming without it, did you?"

Is that a spoiler or just a tease, though? WWE has sure played up the superhero element of his feud with Stardust, but having him wrestle in full Green Arrow gear would be surprising.

And what John Cena has been wearing as of late could be a glimpse into the future of its own. WWE recently designed new merchandise that celebrates Cena's 15 world title reigns.

As Sean Rueter of Cageside Seats points out, Cena's new gear is a possible spoiler for the title match.

Why would WWE go through the trouble to create something that would immediately be obsolete if Cena wins his 16th world title at SummerSlam?

In addition to advertised stars like Cena and Lesnar, SummerSlam may welcome some other notable names to the event.

PWInsider's Mike Johnson reported, "Steve Austin and Ric Flair are already in NYC for the SummerSlam weekend festivities." Johnson noted that Austin is in New York to promote WWE 2K16 and Flair is there to see his daughter Charlotte in action. He also mentioned that Scott Hall and Kevin Nash will be in New York as well, although, as he writes, "what their roles could be we have not confirmed."

With Austin around for video game promotion, it's conceivable that WWE could ask him to stick around for some sort of cameo at the Barclays Center.

The Texas Rattlesnake could run into an old foe if he does. There's an outside chance that The Rock shows up at SummerSlam.

F4WOnline (h/t Wrestle Zone) noted that there have reportedly been rumblings about The Rock possibly showing up to the event. That's far from a guarantee. Still, with SummerSlam being touted as such a big event, it wouldn't be a shocker for WWE to work to get The Great One aboard.

  • Rusev over Ziggler.
  • Amell and Neville over Stardust and Barrett.

  • Team B.A.D. wins.

  • Ryback retains.
  • Non-finish for Rollins vs. Cena.
  • Lesnar over Undertaker.

Making Up for Battleground

WWE hasn't offered much in the way of foreshadowing when it comes to Orton vs. Sheamus. The two rivals have been largely neglected on the narrative front.

The safe bet then is to just go with the heel getting back a win after losing in their last pay-per-view contest. That sets up a potential rubber match at Night of Champions to finish off this underwhelming feud.

Their bouts have been so violent and intense that they might eventually settle this in a Street Fight or Steel Cage match. That points to Sheamus winning, to make sure these men are both 1-1 heading into that contest.

The Champs Survive

Neither The Lucha Dragons nor Los Matadores have any momentum to speak of. The New Day is the only team presented like they have a real chance to win here. And they have been the only ones to have any animosity with the tag champs.

But to have The New Day and The Prime Time Players just trade the titles back and forth doesn't do anyone much good.

Besides, they have been plenty entertaining in a chasing-the-gold mode. They have proved that they don't need to be the titleholders to be the stars of the division.

WWE just had a short tag title reign with Xavier Woods, Big E and Kofi Kingston as the champions. It's more likely they give The Prime Time Players a longer time to hold the straps.

Ziggler's Revenge Has to Wait

With as much attention as the story has received, it's too early to wrap it up.

A Ziggler win leaves little left to look forward to. The driving force of this rivalry is Ziggler's need for redemption. Expect that to come at a later date. This should be just the first of several clashes with Ziggler bringing down The Bulgarian Brute in the end.

Rusev celebrating a victory extends this narrative long enough to include a Summer Rae vs. Lana official brawl of some sort. It gives the heel something to brag about ahead of their next meeting.

Besides, when Hall of Famer Jim Ross sat down with Bleacher Report to offer his predictions, he went with the powerhouse over the showboat:

The Showoff is supposed to be coming off a throat injury. Count on that coming into play as Rusev attacks Ziggler's weak spot to gain the advantage.

The Heroes Prevail

The better story is one with a happy ending. Stardust and Barrett can pick up momentum later. This is WWE's one shot to showcase Amell in a WWE ring.

Bringing him in is a means to create buzz. There's more of that post-SummerSlam should he and Neville win.

WWE is going to want to see mainstream media cover this and plaster Amell and Neville's faces all over the Internet. That's more likely if the babyfaces come out on top.

The Wyatt Family Bond Proves Stronger

There has been so much talk of Reigns and Ambrose's brotherhood that it feels like the precursor to one of them turning on the other. WWE has been especially heavy-handed with showing us how close-knit these two guys are.

That smells like betrayal is on its way.

Former WWE writer Alex Greenfield agrees. He tweeted about similar suspicions:

Whether there is just tension between the two allies or a full-fledged breakup—whether it's Reigns or Ambrose who sticks the knife in his friend's backthe safer bet is Wyatt and Harper coming out on top here.

The Bellas Fall

Team Bella losing sets up a situation where someone from the winning team can earn a title shot. That's especially true if Team B.A.D. pulls out the victory.

Sasha Banks comes off a non-title win over Nikki Bella on the go-home edition of Raw.

Nikki, her sister and Alicia Fox winning would be an indication of things staying the same. Banks, Naomi and Tamina Snuka knocking them off is the kind of system-upsetting scenario that would have people talking the next day.

The Cesaro Section Will Be Happy

Cesaro is more established than Owens on the WWE hierarchy. A push of some sort is coming thanks to his growing popularity. That begins with a big win over Owens.

Owens can always even things up in Round 2, but with the amount of "Cesaro section" increasing and there being more talk about his talent making him worthy of a main event spot, WWE will at least give The King of Swing some upward movement.

Whatever the outcome, though, this promises to be a show-stealer. Unless WWE decides to have this end in an anticlimactic way, the two veterans of the independent circuit will produce something special.

Ryback Rules

It would be a baffling move to put the title on Big Show or The Miz now.

The Miz has been treated like no threat. Big Show doesn't add intrigue to the championship. Therefore, a Ryback on the rise does make sense to remain as champion.

Thanks to the staph infection he suffered recently, he hasn't had a real shot as the intercontinental titleholder yet. Count on this being his first big test and first big victory since winning the belt.

Ryback will trounce his foes and move on to a new rival by the time Night of Champions rolls around.

Winner Does Not Take All

Something strange is on the horizon here. It doesn't seem plausible that either Cena or Rollins walks out of the arena with both the U.S. and world titles.

WWE hasn't shown enough confidence in Rollins that suggests it would crown him a double champion and allow him to knock off Cena. And if Cena leaves with both belts, where does that leave the secondary title he has been busy elevating?

To have him just vacate it would make it feel less important.

With all those questions swirling around, bet on something unexpected preventing a real finish. Sheamus could cash in his Money in the Bank contract, for one.

Bleacher Report's Big Nasty is in agreement. He predicts that the bout won't have a decisive ending:

This is likely where WWE offers a cliffhanger for the next Raw and beyond. Lesnar and Undertaker aren't going to be around consistently in the following months. Instead, whatever controversial outcome happens in this match will serve as the key story in the coming weeks.

The Beast Conquers Again

One theory floating around is that Undertaker wins here and Lesnar sends Undertaker packing in the rubber match at WrestleMania 32. WWE going with this match three times is no guarantee, though. Lesnar vs. The Rock would be a better draw and something fresher at this point.

Undertaker not being the hero and the company making such an effort to build up Lesnar over the past two years point to The Deadman losing. Up to this point, it's taken interference and his not being involved in the decision to lose since early 2014.

Why have the most dominant force you have on the roster lose cleanly to a man who maybe has just one match in him after this?

Bleacher Report's Dan Pecoraro thinks otherwise, believing that Undertaker's newly heel-like attitude means that he will win come Sunday:

However this match plays out, it will signal what's ahead for both men at WrestleMania. A Lesnar win is a sign he's moving on to a new foe. A triumph by Undertaker likely means the final chapter of this rivalry will unfold in Dallas next year.
