WWE SummerSlam 2015: Feuds Guaranteed to Disappoint Fans

Aaron BowerAug 21, 2015

With a hefty 10 matches slated for this year's edition of SummerSlam, it's sadly inevitable that a couple of feuds on the card will ultimately flatter to deceive.

Whether that's because there's simply more interesting things going on elsewhere or even because the rivalry has failed to get off the ground and get anyone to buy into it, there are numerous reasons why some feuds will let fans down or feel a bit flat.

There will be plenty of good at SummerSlam, but the following matchups could be regarded as big letdowns by the time the final curtain falls on Sunday night.

Dolph Ziggler vs. Rusev

You get the feeling that had WWE made a serious effort with two of its most promising and interesting talents, this could have been a great feud.

Unfortunately, it's come around at a time of year which puts it way down the card in terms of interest and intrigue, and with the dismal booking of the feud up to this point, there's little to get excited about.

The fact that Ziggler only returned to WWE programming this past week on Raw meant that most of the build was focused on the rather disappointing feud between Lana and Summer Rae, which has done neither man any good.

Rusev has been forced into the background while picking up some uninspiring wins, and Ziggler hasn't even been around. His late return means that he's had little input in the rivalry and will step into the ring on Sunday with little background behind his crusade to take down Rusev.

The saddest thing of all is that given how they're two really bright talents, the result probably won't even mean a great deal for either moving forward.

Stephen Amell and Neville vs. King Barrett and Stardust

It's always difficult to know what to make of a celebrity appearance in a wrestling match, and judging by recent standards of celebrities WWE have brought into the squared circle, Stephen Amell is in better shape than most.

He may put on a decent effort when he teams with Neville to take on King Barrett and Stardust, but the whole feud doesn't really have a lot of sparkle about it.

It's the Stardust character which is perhaps most important to look at here; clearly, he has a lot of talent and potential in WWE, but there's a feeling that the Stardust gimmick has run its course and that a return to his Cody Rhodes gimmick would be better for his career.

Blurring the lines and introducing a major superstar from outside WWE into his storylines has done a decent enough job of keeping him interesting, but this is clearly going to be a one-off match with little impact on the future of everyone involved.

Drafting King Barrett in, a guy who is also in need of a fast repackage, at the last minute was another move that will only disappoint fans further.

Randy Orton vs. Sheamus

The sad thing about this example is that Randy Orton vs. Sheamus should be a bout in which fans can really get interested.

It could be a world title match in the months or years to come, especially with Sheamus' position as Mr. Money in the Bank.

But what have WWE done to get fans interested in this bout? In truth, not a lot. For the most part, Orton and Sheamus have been seemingly making up the numbers in other rivalries played out on Raw and SmackDown; take this past week, for example.

Orton teamed up with Cesaro to take on Sheamus and Kevin Owens in what felt like a hastily arranged tag match. Wouldn't Orton and Sheamus have been better served with an angle of their own to build some tension and momentum ahead of their showdown at SummerSlam?

The stats also don't make for great reading. Since Money in the Bank and Sheamus' victory, the Irishman hasn't beaten Orton once, be it in a tag match or on his own, according to ProFightDB.com. That's meant little back-and-forth in the feud, and little of interest. Factor in the fact that Orton pinned Sheamus cleanly, and it leaves little to the imagination ahead of Sunday.

This will prove to be an important night for Sheamus, though, as he seeks to lay down a marker ahead of a probable reign as WWE world heavyweight champion over the next few months. Should he get past Orton at long last, WWE fans will be looking for something to boost the Celtic Warrior's standing.
