WWE SmackDown Results: Winners, Grades, Reaction and Highlights from August 20

The Doctor Chris MuellerAug 20, 2015

Every week on Bleacher Report, I take an in-depth look at WWE SmackDown to recap the action, offer analysis and grade the matches, segments and anything else that takes place on the show, as well as make a few predictions for future events.

SummerSlam is Sunday, and with all the hype leading up to the event, expectations are high. A few big matches have been booked, a celebrity is wrestling and The Undertaker is making his first SummerSlam appearance in years.

Extending the show to four hours was a smart move. It makes the pay-per-view feel like a bigger deal. According to WWE.com, 10 matches have been booked, so we are in store for a big night.

Let's take a look at what happened on the final show on the road to SummerSlam.

Ryback vs. Big Show

1 of 7

SmackDown, like Raw, often opens with a promo from someone in the main event scene. This week took a different path and got right to the action, with a singles match between two participants in the Intercontinental Championship match at SummerSlam.

Big Show and Ryback have been in the ring plenty of times together, so they have the kind of chemistry that makes everything they do look natural.

However, that doesn't mean the match was anything special. They did their usual song and dance, but the moment when they crashed through the barricade was a good way to end things without one person getting the win.

Adding The Miz to the mix at SummerSlam will definitely help the pace of the match. Ryback and Big Show are both talented in their own ways, but they are not known for their quickness.

Grade: C+

Notes and Highlights:

  • Big Show's chest chops look more painful than his chokeslam, but his spear leaves something to be desired.
  • Was the LED part of the apron broken during the mayhem? When the fight went outside the ring it wasn't lit up at all.
  • Why did the screen go green for a moment at the end of the match? Did Big Show and Ryback knock a wire loose when they crashed through the wall?

The New Day vs. Los Matadores

2 of 7

On paper, this looks like just another goofy gimmick match to bide time until SummerSlam. Fortunately, it ended up being better than expected.

Say what you will about ridiculous gimmicks like Los Matadores and El Torito, but they add an element to WWE shows that the more serious characters can't.

WWE is all about colorful characters, exciting action and having fun, and Fernando, Diego and El Torito are all of those things. The hardcore fans may find them hard to watch, but these guys give their all every time they get in the ring.

The New Day are just as capable of performing at a fast pace while still having fun. Together, these six men produced a match that was entertaining, and that is what's important in the end. The New Day picked up the win when Xavier Woods pinned El Torito following a huge running splash from Big E.

Grade: B-

Notes and Highlights:

  • Has anyone figured out if Los Matadores are heels or babyfaces yet? One day they are teaming with New Day, the next they are fighting each other. The tag team division needs more consistency.
  • For some reason, The New Day were shown dunking a plush basketball through a toy hoop onto some poor guy backstage before the match.
  • Big E looked like he was having way too much fun beating on El Torito.

Dolph Ziggler and Lana

3 of 7

Dolph Ziggler made his return to SmackDown in a segment that saw him address the crowd with Lana by his side. He said it was seeing Lana in The Accolade that forced him to get off his couch and return.

Predictably, Rusev and Summer Rae came out to crash the party right as Ziggler and Lana started making out in the ring.

They traded insults for a little while, but nothing ever really happened. Both men were decent on the mic, but this segment felt unnecessary. A video package would have been just as effective.

Grade: C

Notes and Highlights:

  • Lana must have had extensions put in. Her hair is so much longer than it was a month ago.
  • Lana has done an amazing job transitioning her accent. She makes subtle changes every week to make sure it isn't noticeable, but if you watch a video from six months ago compared to this week, you will see the difference. It's actually pretty impressive.

Bo Dallas vs. Neville

4 of 7

Bo Dallas and Neville had some great encounters in NXT, so we knew going into this match that they had enough chemistry to put on a good show.

Unfortunately for Dallas, the match didn't last long enough for him to do anything special. The win made Neville look good heading into his big SummerSlam debut, but it could have been a show-stealing bout had they been given two segments.

Stardust and King Barrett came on the big screen and taunted Neville from an undisclosed location. While Stardust and Barrett seem like a team that was thrown together out of nowhere, they actually work well together.

Both men have gimmicks that are a little weird, and when they delivered their promo, it was like two supervillains teaming up to take on Batman.

Grade: C-

Notes and Highlights:

  • Bo Dallas should go back to NXT. Those fans loved him and he was actually booked like a top talent.
  • WWE added a Green Arrow hood to the picture of Stephen Amell. It would be hilarious if he wore his Green Arrow costume for his match at SummerSlam.
  • Barrett was petting his crown like it was a cat and he was a Bond villain. They should have just given him a random cat and never addressed it.

Brie Bella vs. Sasha Banks vs. Becky Lynch

5 of 7

Before the match got started, Team Bella addressed the crowd with a promo. All three women had some time to talk, but Nikki Bella took most of the spotlight. Team BAD and two thirds of Team PCB came out and said a few words before the bell rang.

Brie, Becky Lynch and Sasha Banks worked well together. This wasn't the best match we have seen during the Divas revolution, but all three women came ready to perform.

Brie picked up the win over Lynch with some dirty tactics, but the victory still gives Team Bella the momentum heading into SummerSlam. However, there is a popular theory that whoever gets a win before a PPV will end up losing at the big event, so you never know.

Grade: B

Notes and Highlights:

  • Fox's tutu looks really out of place.
  • Casting agents in Hollywood need to take notice of Banks. She is one of the most convincing performers in the Divas division. Her body language and facial expressions are great.
  • It feels like WWE is prolonging Nikki's title reign just so it can have a current Diva claim to have it the longest instead of AJ Lee.

Ambrose, Orton, Reigns and Cesaro vs. Wyatt, Harper, Owens and Sheamus

6 of 7

Eight competitors is a lot for one match, but WWE gave them more than enough time to make sure everyone was given some time against their main rival.

Cesaro, Dean Ambrose, Kevin Owens and Roman Reigns picked up the win. The most surprising thing was that Ambrose was the one who ended up getting the pin. You would expect Orton or Reigns to be the one making the final glory in a bout like this.

It eventually turned into an all-out war, as these things tend to do. The fact that everything was executed perfectly with so many moving parts was impressive.

Grade: B

Notes and Highlights:

  • The way Owens was taunting his opponents during this match was hilarious. He was born to be a heel.
  • Between the backstage promo and the actual match, these eight men were given more than a quarter of the show.

Final Thoughts and Predictions

7 of 7

Since this was the final show before Sunday's SummerSlam PPV, it's understandable that a lot of time was devoted to video packages and only five matches were shown.

Most of what we saw was entertaining enough to warrant tuning in, but nothing monumental happened to advance any storylines.

Sunday's event is being treated like a second WrestleMania, so we should be in for some great action and entertaining surprises.

With this being the final show before the pay-per-view, all of the predictions will pertain to matches taking place on Sunday.

Predictions

  • Dolph Ziggler will defeat Rusev, and Lana will put Summer Rae in The Accolade.
  • Team PCB will defeat Team BAD and Team Bella.
  • Kevin Owens will defeat Cesaro, but he will cheat to do it.
  • Randy Orton will defeat Sheamus.
  • Roman Reigns and Dean Ambrose will defeat The Wyatt Family.
  • Ryback will retain the IC title.
  • The New Day will win the Tag Team Championship.
  • Stephen Amell and Neville will beat Stardust and King Barrett.
  • Seth Rollins will retain the WWE World Heavyweight Championship, but the circumstances will make it so he doesn't win the United States Championship.
  • The Undertaker will defeat Brock Lesnar.

What did you think of this week's SmackDown, and what are your predictions for SummerSlam 2015?
