Antonio Cromartie Injury: Updates on Jets Star's Knee and Return

Alec NathanSep 13, 2015

New York Jets cornerback Antonio Cromartie suffered a sprained knee in the regular-season opener against the Cleveland Browns but was listed as active for Week 2's matchup against the Indianapolis Colts, the Jets announced Monday.

Brian Costello of the New York Post reported Cromartie was limited in practice Saturday. The corner said he felt a pop when he hurt his knee and was "relieved" when he got the diagnosis, according to Laura Albanese of Newsday on Sept. 16.

On Sept. 13, Kimberly Jones of NFL.com reported Cromartie was unable to put weight on his left leg as he was helped to the sideline after going down without contact against the Browns.

After suiting up for the Jets from 2010 to 2013, Cromartie spent a season with the Arizona Cardinals before former Cardinals defensive coordinator and new Jets head coach Todd Bowles brought the defender back to the Meadowlands.

However, pressure is mounting on the 31-year-old now that he's reunited with shutdown savant Darrelle Revis. With Revis locking up one side of the field at all times, quarterbacks will be more inclined to look toward Cromartie as they seek to eat up chunks of yardage through the air.

With that said, the four-time Pro Bowler pointed out early in training camp that the team's pass rush could alleviate some of those concerns.

"Honestly, I think there's not going to be a lot of time left to try to drop back and throw the ball, or take a five-step drop and throw the ball," Cromartie said Aug. 5, according to NJ Advance Media's Darryl Slater. "If you see how quick we're looking now, I think it's going to even pick up more when the game picks up. I think we've got the utmost confidence in ourselves in the back end."

Cromartie isn't renowned as much of a shutdown corner these days, but the Jets need their veterans healthy to provide stability in the secondary in the wake of Dee Milliner's wrist surgery.
