Pretenders In The South Eastern Conference Second Edition

Kevin McGradySep 15, 2009

In version one of this article I listed South Carolina and Ole Miss as pretenders. Ole Miss has not played since that article and South Carolina has proven themselves incapable of winning by grasping defeat out of the jaws of victory. Nothing has changed with these two teams and neither has the label pretender.

SEC West Division

Since the Ole Miss Rebels take first place in the Pretender category in this division we will dig a little deeper and look to second place.

The winner of second place pretender award in the SEC West is the LSU Tigers. This is an immensely talented team that could man up and beat up any team in the SEC if it all was just together. The defense has been a let down for LSU. The defensive line has been less than dominant and the pass coverage has been spotty at best. This is a team full of the best talent the country has to offer. I expect better from them and so do the LSU Fans.

Arkansas will show how much they have improved this week playing Georgia.

Auburn has already exceeded pre season expectations.

Mississippi State is better this year on offense and defense and this will show at some point along the way.

SEC Eastern Division

South Carolina is the standing pretender here, and grabbing defeat from the jaws of victory last weekend did nothing to remove that crown.

Second Place Pretender of the East award goes to Georgia. In week one they played a dismal game with Oklahoma State and smelled up the field good enough to loose this match up against a mediocre Big 12 team.  This was not the play of the team, it was just poor coaching plain and simple. Opportunity after opportunity were ignored by the Georgia Offense. The defense showed up but barely in this very forgettable game.

Tennessee was exposed by UCLA this week also. This was a close call but, I give Tennessee a ride this week as their quarterback was playing for UCLA as well and that made it 12 on ten football.

Vanderbilt did better than expected against LSU this week. If anything they over performed. I look for Mississippi State to give them fits this week.

Kentucky is back in action this week after a week of preparation.

I think it is entirely possible that Mississippi State could win the Battle of Mississippi this year over Ole Miss.

Vanderbilt could win The Battle of Tennessee over Tennessee.

Florida will try to embarrass Tennessee this week and will fail. Tennessee will loose, but do so in a way where they can hold their heads high.
