Brock Lesnar Discusses Vince McMahon, Dana White's Comments on WWE
WWE Superstar Brock Lesnar appeared on ESPN's SportsCenter Tuesday morning, and The Beast Incarnate didn't take kindly to UFC president and former boss Dana White's recent comments regarding professional wrestling.
When criticized by a fan on Twitter about the pricing of UFC's pay-per-views in comparison to WWE in July, White was dismissive of professional wrestling and labeled it as "fake." (Warning: Some language NSFW):
After being asked about White's take on WWE, the veteran of both the squared circle and the Octagon compared the two entities during his SportsCenter appearance (h/t Sean Rueter of Cageside Seats):
"Well, of course, Dana, it's fake, everybody knows that. But it's still the same ... you're promoting the same thing we're promoting. Dana White is promoting fights, we're promoting fights. It just so happens we get a little more longevity out of our fight, and out of our fighters, because of the circumstances. It is a staged arena, everybody knows that ... and if you can't turn WWE on, Monday night, and get something out of that show, and be entertained, then there's something wrong with you. So, Dana ... probably in his defense is promoting fighting, but it's the same thing. He's trying to sell pay-per-views, he's trying to sell money fights ... it's the same racket.
"
The former UFC World Heavyweight champion and WWE World Heavyweight champion also used his appearance to compliment WWE Chairman Vince McMahon's promoting abilities while offering his theory regarding White's negativity at the same time, per SportsCenter's official Twitter account:
WWE provided video of the interview on Twitter, which features Lesnar discussing several additional subjects, including his upcoming match at SummerSlam:
Lesnar decided against returning to the world of mixed martial arts in March and instead signed a new deal with WWE. As part of that contract, The Beast Incarnate will main event SummerSlam Sunday, Aug. 23, at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, against The Undertaker.
Perhaps it can be argued that there are some sour grapes on White's part with regard to Lesnar's return to WWE rather than UFC, but there was also a certain amount of gamesmanship, as he is attempting to appeal to much of the same demographic as McMahon.
Few people know McMahon and White better than Lesnar, since he has been at the pinnacle of both companies, and it is fair to say that he is playing the game as well in an attempt to generate further interest in SummerSlam and WWE as a whole.
