Iowa Band Member Derek Phillips Taken Off Life Support After Collapsing at Week 1 Game

University of Iowa band member Derek Phillips has been taken off life support after collapsing during Saturday's season-opening football game between the Hawkeyes and Northern Illinois.

In a post on his Instagram written by his family, they said they made the "heartbreaking decision to remove" Phillips from life support after he suffered "sudden cardiac arrest" during the game:

"Despite the extraordinary efforts of the ICU team at the University of Iowa Hospital, the damage to his brain was too severe, and we have made the heartbreaking decision to remove life support. ... Derek is comfortable, surrounded by family, and enveloped in the music he loved so much. Thank you for every prayer, every shared experience, and every bit of love you've given to our boy."

University of Iowa Public Relations Manager Chris Brewer issued a statement about Phillips to Evan Watson of the Daily Iowan:

"The entire Hawkeye Marching Band family is thinking of Derek Phillips and his loved ones. We are grateful to his parents for providing regular updates to the students who love Derek. This is heartbreaking for everyone who cares for him. The university is in close contact and is offering support."

Iowa announced during the game that the marching band was foregoing the scheduled halftime performance due to the heat.

Phillips is a third-year student at the University of Iowa.
