Making Call on the Jacksonville Jaguars' Hardest Remaining Cuts

Evan ReierAug 17, 2015

With one week of the preseason completely behind us, the Jacksonville Jaguars are continuing to improve and build a team for this season and the future. Sadly, that includes cutting the roster down, and there will be some hard decisions for the Jaguars to make.

The Jaguars' newfound depth and competition across the roster mean that the distance between a starting job and becoming a free agent is tighter than ever. Players who haven't secured starting jobs now have a lot of work to do thanks to the new wave of players.

It's a tough situation, and you can't help but wish you could take a few more roster spots. But this is the situation the Jaguars are in, and they have to make the right decisions to make sure they have the proper squad going forward.

Roster cuts are part of the game, and the Jaguars realize this. That's why the close battles that result in one player leaving and one player staying are so hard to call, but the Jaguars staff will do its best all the same.

Cap Capi

1 of 5

Nordly "Cap" Capi has been a quiet name for most of the offseason. It was going to be an uphill battle for the 6'3", 249-pound defensive end thanks to killer depth at the "Leo" position, but he's recently turned up the heat to earn recognition.

His two-sack performance in the first preseason game against the Pittsburgh Steelers was impressive, although he wasn't playing with the first-team defense or against the Steelers' first-team offense.

But it was impressive all the same and stood out thanks to an absent night from the defensive ends who played before him. The Jaguars pass rush as a whole was lackluster, but the specialist Leo position was awfully quiet.

Capi can continue his push throughout the preseason, but Chris Clemons, Andre Branch, Ryan Davis and Chris Smith are in front of him. It doesn't seem possible for him to grab a roster spot.

However, he is a young, malleable talent, and he may be able to find a spot on the practice squad, which would be beneficial for both him and the Jaguars. It's a tough situation, but there is a good outcome waiting, should Capi continue to perform.

Corey Grant

2 of 5

Corey Grant has been a Jaguars fan favorite, and deservedly so. He's extremely quick and has shown promise to be an explosive option as a running back and punt returner, but it doesn't seem like he'll be able to overcome the depth at both options.

Grant was never going to win a roster spot based off his skills at running back. He's not terrible, by any means, but with options like T.J. Yeldon, Toby Gerhart, Denard Robinson and Bernard Pierce, Grant found himself in situation similar to that of Capi.

However, it seemed like Grant could use that speed as a return man. Quickness is crucial to big returns, and Grant is arguably the fastest player on the Jaguars, as his 4.28- and 4.30-second 40-yard-dash times would indicate, per NFL Media's Gil Brandt (via NFL.com's Chase Goodbread).

Grant hasn't found a starting job as a returner; instead, he's tied for last on the depth chart with former Auburn teammate Nick Marshall. It didn't help that wide receiver Rashad Greene showed out against the Steelers with a 37-yard return.

Grant has talentand his NFL career is not close to being overbut he hasn't performed well enough to make the team this year as an undrafted free agent.

Jason Myers

3 of 5

Jason Myers recently burst onto the Jaguars kicking scene thanks to an impressive leg and better all-around performances in practice—so much so that he seems to be a legitimate competitor for veteran Josh Scobee for the starting job, and likely the only roster spot for kickers.

While Myers has an incredible leg and a high ceiling, Scobee can already guarantee what Myers potentially offers. Scobee is reliable and, despite being 33 years old and toward the end of his career, still offers enough power to be an NFL starter.

Myers is a talent to keep an eye on, and if the Jaguars can sign him to the practice squad, he'd be an option to consider in the future.

Sadly, the situation at hand has winners and losers, and the legendary Scobee will take on the kicking job for at least one more year. There just aren't enough spots to go around.

Storm Johnson

4 of 5

Storm Johnson entered the 2015 preseason not as a backup, third-string or even fourth-string running back. He was, and arguably still is, fifth on the depth chart, and it's fair to say that his chances of earning a roster spot are slim to none.

The addition of Pierce off waivers, followed by the selection of Yeldon in the second round of the 2015 NFL draft, made it apparent that Johnson wasn't going to walk into a roster spot like he did last season.

While all the running backs in front of him are better options, it's still sad to see him go.

He showed promising moments last season, and there's a good chance that he could improve and become a decent running back in the NFL. The Jaguars are striving for more than decent, obviously, but it's never fun to cut young talent.

Rashaad Reynolds

5 of 5

Cornerback Rashaad Reynolds made a statement against the Steelers in the race for the final roster spots, but it may be too late. A few different cornerbacks have made their pushes, and it seems like Reynolds has too much ground to cover to earn a spot.

Marshall has surprisingly excelled after his switch from quarterback in college to cornerback with the Jaguars, and his continued improvement has made him a fan favorite and earned respect from his teammates and coaches as well.

Jeremy Harris (back) is finally healthy and has looked solid through the offseason, and players like Dwayne Gratz are doing enough to maintain their spots on the team. There's no room for Reynolds, save for an extensive push in the next few weeks with some luck worked in.

Reynolds has shown that he can make plays and be a legitimate option, but there isn't enough time to overtake his competitors.
