Manchester United Transfer News: Pedro Anger Sparked by Thomas Muller Rumours

Gianni VerschuerenAug 17, 2015

Manchester United's move for Barcelona star Pedro has reportedly hit a roadblock, as Barcelona are believed to be upset over the Red Devils' reluctance to pay an additional £3.6 million amid rumours of large offers being made for Bayern Munich star Thomas Muller.

That's according to Catalan newspaper Sport (h/t Metro's George Bellshaw), who now believe Pedro's move, which was expected to be completed on Tuesday, could be further delayed:

"

The Red Devils were set to push through a move for the Spanish World Cup winner on Tuesday but there are fears that it will now be delayed.

Barcelona are frustrated that £3.6m of the deal has been offered in add-ons rather than as a full cash amount.

United have currently offered £17.8m in cash with the add-ons but Barcelona want the full £21.4m up front.

They are particularly annoyed as United continue to offer such large sums of money for Bayern Munich star Thomas Muller, according to Sport.

The Blaugrana aren't the only ones confused at the fact United haven't met Pedro's buyout clause yet. As shared by BT Sport Football, so is Andy Brassell:

United have been linked with Bavarian star Muller all summer, and while a deal has never seemed likely, Bayern chief executive Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has only fuelled speculation there may actually be some truth to the rumours by categorically ruling out a sale to the German media, as reported by the Daily Mail's Simon Jones:

"

It's difficult. Everyone knows our old friend Louis van Gaal. He is very stubborn in those things Maybe he thinks that there is a price where Bayern will start to ruminate but there is no price at all. As I said because of our partners and our really good financial situation we are completely resistant.

There is no price, Thomas Muller has four years more on his contract. There is no one, not here or anywhere, who can explain to me why we should sell Thomas Muller.

"

The Daily Express' John Richardson claims Ed Woodward has offered the Bavarians up to £60 million for his services, and it's these kind of rumours that likely don't sit well with Barcelona.

Money hasn't been an issue for United in the past few years, and following the sale of Angel Di Maria to Paris Saint-Germain, Woodward has the funds to make another big splash this summer. The likes of Memphis Depay, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Morgan Schneiderlin have already moved to Old Trafford, and one more top signing is expected.

Pedro is the most likely candidate to be that signing, and with that in mind, it's reasonable to wonder why exactly United are reportedly haggling over such a minor fee. Prudence is a good thing in the age of Financial Fair Play, but if manager Louis van Gaal is desperate to sign Pedro, you'd expect the club to just pay the Catalans whatever they want.

The Red Devils have started the 2015-16 Premier League campaign with back-to-back 1-0 wins, and in both matches, the forwards failed to make an impression. The London Evening Standard's Liam was hardly impressed during United's win over Aston Villa:

Defensively, the squad looks solid, if unspectacular, and the midfield unit should be a strength once the new arrivals get comfortable with each other and build chemistry. In contrast, the attack needs an injection of pace and creativity, and adding an experienced star like Pedro is exactly what the club needs to do.

Sport believes the deal will still come to fruition, but one has to wonder why it's taking Woodward so long to just come up with the cash necessary and bring Pedro to Old Trafford. The club needs him, and the sooner he arrives, the more time he will have to build a connection with his new team-mates.
