Chelsea Transfer News: Latest on Kurt Zouma and Antonio Rudiger Rumours
AS Roma's chase for a new defender has reportedly led the Italians to Chelsea's Kurt Zouma and Stuttgart's Antonio Rudiger, who also happens to be on manager Jose Mourinho's wishlist, per talkSPORT.
Both English and Italian reports claim Zouma is wanted by the Giallorossi, with the Sunday People's Steve Goodman claiming Roma have launched £25 million offer and Gazzetta dello Sport (per the Sunday Times, via Football Italia) floating the idea of a loan move:
"The Giallorossi have been linked to an exceptionally long list of names to bolster their defence in the last few weeks, and the latest appears to be 20-year-old Frenchman's Zouma.
The link was originally forwarded by the Sunday People, who claimed that Roma had launched a €35m bid for the player.
Now the Sunday Times, as reported by La Gazzetta dello Sport, claims that sporting director Walter Sabatini is attempting to negotiate a loan deal for the player to avoid paying the full transfer fee now.

The 20-year-old is widely regarded as one of Chelsea's best young talents, making a permanent transfer highly unlikely. A loan move may be an option, and Roma are definitely in the market for another centre-back after the sale of Alessio Romagnoli to AC Milan.
But even a loan move seems unlikely at this point. Zouma is Chelsea's main backup at the centre-back position behind Gary Cahill and John Terry, and during the 2014-15 campaign, he proved he has the versatility to also be deployed in midfield. Depth will be crucial in the upcoming season, and it's hard to envision Mourinho deciding to part ways with Zouma right now.
The youngster proved his potential last season and could be in for a major breakout campaign, particularly if one of Cahill or Terry suffers an injury. Even if the duo stays healthy, the Blues' busy schedule means there will be plenty of minutes for Zouma, whether it's in cup matches, the Premier League or the UEFA Champions League.
The Frenchman is a precious talent, and Roma would undoubtedly love to bring him to the Italian capital. But unless Mourinho has a massive change of heart or Everton's John Stones makes the rumoured move to Stamford Bridge, per the MailOnline's Sami Mokbel, a move for Zouma seems highly unlikely.
Battle for Antonio Rudiger

A more realistic option for Roma is Rudiger, who is on the verge of completing a move to the Serie A, per David Amoyal, a translator for Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio:
"Sabatini is ready to welcome a new center back at Roma. The giallorossi's sporting director is on the verge of completing the deal with Stuttgart for Antonio Rudiger, the player will arrive on loan with option to buy which will become forced after Rudiger appears in a certain number of games—the total cost of the operation should be around €9 million. Rudiger could arrive in Italy as early as Monday to join his new club.
"
The 22-year-old is widely regarded as one of the top defensive prospects in Germany and has already made a number of appearances for the national team. Blessed with excellent size, athleticism and passing ability, he's the perfect example of the modern German centre-back, similar to Borussia Dortmund's Mats Hummels.
Rudiger isn't a finished product, as he tends to struggle with concentration and can be caught out of position. But he has tremendous potential, and ESPN FC's Nick Dorrington understands why teams are interested in his services:
"Rudiger's reputation has steadily increased over the last couple of years and he is now starting to attract attention from larger clubs, both domestically and from elsewhere in Europe. He is far from the finished article but with strong physical attributes and good passing ability, he has sufficient potential to make him an attractive project.
"
Romagnoli spent the 2014-15 season on loan with Sampdoria, so it's not as if Roma are desperate to fill an empty slot in their squad, but Rudiger would be an excellent purchase by the Giallorossi regardless.
He has the talent to become a top-class defender, and a move to Italy, where defending and positioning is considered an art form, should do wonders for his development.
Roma can offer the youngster more playing time than Chelsea, adding to their appeal. And given the chatter surrounding Stones, it seems the Blues aren't short on defensive targets. Rudiger would have been a nice capture, but Chelsea can afford to let him walk and shift their focus.
