Klay Thompson Calls Out 'Casuals' Over Ray Allen Debate, Cites Warriors Stats During NBA Title Runs
Klay Thompson defended himself in a debate amongst fans on social media on Thursday.
An Instagram post from the Swish List podcast was debating whether Thompson or Ray Allen is a better all-time player, and Thompson made his case against the legendary sharpshooter. Some fans were bringing up the two players' scoring numbers, which Thompson said were a reflection of how good their teams were.
"You do realize I was the second leading scorer on two championship teams without [Kevin Durant]? You want me to go to a bad team and put up empty stats, that's easy buddy," he commented on the post.
He also pointed out his performance in the 2016 NBA Finals as fans downplayed his success with the Golden State Warriors.
"Holy s--t I led the 2016 playoffs in points scored you casuals," Thompson wrote.
Both Thompson and Allen were tremendous players in their primes, and both played a huge role on championship teams. Allen won a title with the Celtics and another with the Heat, while Thompson won four with Golden State.
It's a fair debate to have, but most NBA fans likely recognize that both players are among the best of their respective generations.
Thompson, perhaps getting some confidence with age, has had no problem responding to digs on social media this summer. Earlier this month, he called out his former teammate Kevin Durant when he said the current Philadelphia 76ers are better than his Warriors teams.
While most NBA players avoid discourse from fans on social media, Thompson has perhaps earned the right to defend his name after all the success he's had during his career.
The question now is how Thompson will continue adding to his legacy.
He recently said that he wants to "compete" for a title and "play a role on a team that can make a deep playoff run," and it's fair to say that the Mavs aren't exactly built to win a championship right now.
Thompson is under contract this season, but whether he'll request a trade remains to be seen.
