WWE SmackDown Results: Winners, Grades, Reaction and Highlights from August 13
Every week on Bleacher Report, I take an in-depth look at WWE SmackDown to recap the action, offer analysis and grade the matches, segments and anything else that takes place on the show, as well as make a few predictions for future events.
WWE seems to have found a formula to make good episodes of SmackDown. Five matches with a few promos mixed in has been a successful pattern recently.
The way each division is represented equally is impressive, and it helps that the WWE world heavyweight champion is regularly appearing on SmackDown for once. Past champions have been primarily featured on Raw, but Seth Rollins pulls double duty every week.
The Divas revolution continues to produce top-quality matches on a regular basis, and it won't be long before they end up in the main event of a future episode of Raw.
Let's take a look at everything that happened on this week's SmackDown.
Opening Segment
1 of 7Seth Rollins opened the show with a promo. That feels like a sentence that is typed a lot in these SmackDown recaps. He is almost always in the opening segment.
He talked about his legacy as champion, and even had the audacity to compare himself to legends such as Babe Ruth and Michael Jordan.
He ended up daring John Cena to show up at Raw and accept his title-versus-title challenge personally. Predictably, he was eventually interrupted.
Neville came to the ring and exchanged some words with the champion until Cesaro came out. Kevin Owens attacked Cesaro in the aisle, which prompted Rollins to grab Neville and hit him with a corner powerbomb
This was a solid opening segment. It's not going to be remembered in a few days, but it made Rollins and Owens look dangerous.
Grade: B-
Notes and Highlights
- The fact Rollins appears on SmackDown as the WWE champion so often makes the show feel like a bigger deal. When John Cena was champion, he barely ever made an appearance on the blue brand.
- Neville looks so much shorter standing next to Rollins than he did when they were wrestling each other.
- Is "On and on and on" going to be Cesaro's new catchphrase? The fans were saying it right along with him.
Charlotte vs. Naomi
2 of 7Naomi and Charlotte met in singles action for the second time in as many weeks, and they did not disappoint. This match had a lot of physicality from both women.
Naomi is finally getting the chance to show off what she is capable of on her own. We have always known how athletic she is, but the Divas never used to get the kind of time she needs to properly display her skills.
Charlotte has had more opportunities to prove herself because the women in NXT have been given lengthier matches than the main-roster Divas for a long time.
Charlotte picked up a clean win, but Naomi got in the lion's share of the offense, so both women came away from this one looking great.
Grade: B+
Notes and Highlights
- Team PCB is not a great name. WWE has a deal in place with Tapout clothing. This would have been the perfect opportunity to do some cross-promoting by naming them Team Tap Out. It fits with the submission theme of their finishers and advertises the company.
- It's funny hearing Jimmy Uso do commentary on his wife's matches.
- Charlotte needs to slowly phase out all the references to her father. She is good enough to make a name for herself without needing to remind us she is Ric Flair's daughter.
Ryback Talks to the WWE Universe
3 of 7Ryback came out to talk to the WWE Universe about winning the Intercontinental Championship and having to take time off because of a staph infection.
The Big Guy showed some good energy and a lot of confidence during this segment. He has improved so much over the past 12 months, and the fact nobody has chanted Goldberg's name at him in a year is a testament to his hard work.
It was surprising nobody interrupted him, but he did a good job hyping his title defense at SummerSlam by himself.
Grade: B-
Notes and Highlights
- This doesn't deserve its own slide, but it has to be noted the video package featuring Stardust and Stephen Amell that played before this segment was outstanding.
Luke Harper vs. Roman Reigns
4 of 7Luke Harper got the chance to give a quick promo before Bray Wyatt took over. Wyatt might be the more charismatic of the two, but Harper is somehow creepier.
The match that followed was exactly what you would expect from Roman Reigns and Harper. They have had many showdowns, but they always manage to bring out the best in each other.
Ambrose and Wyatt ended up brawling outside the ring for a little while before Wyatt caused a disqualification by attacking Reigns.
They all ended up fighting in and out of the ring for quite some time. When the dust settled, Reigns and Ambrose were left standing tall.
We have seen these four men work together a lot over the past few years, but somehow it never gets old. Their gimmicks couldn't be any more different, but they found a way to make it work.
Grade: B
Notes and Highlights
- Harper really connected with a dropkick at one point. Reigns looked like he was in real pain.
- Uso was getting hyper while everyone was brawling at ringside. He brings a good enthusiasm to the broadcast table.
- Sheamus delivered a great promo backstage after the match. It was the kind of speech that would have worked well for a heel or a babyface.
The New Day vs. Prime Time Players
5 of 7Xavier Woods almost always stands in Kofi Kingston and Big E's corner during regular tag team matches, but he ended up teaming with Big E while Kingston stood outside the ring this time.
The Prime Time Players and New Day work so well together, but this feud is beginning to feel repetitive. It's good Los Matadores and Lucha Dragons have been brought into the mix to shake things up, but it might be too little too late.
Titus O'Neil is usually the one who gets the hot tag and goes on a rampage, but Darren Young was given that honor toward the end of this match.
The New Day tried to leave before the bout was over, but they were cut off by Diego, Fernando, Kalisto and Sin Cara. PTP picked up the win after Young nailed Woods with a Gut Check. It was an entertaining contest that did a good job pushing the tag title match at SummerSlam.
Grade: B-
Notes and Highlights
- The ref easily could have counted both teams out when they faced off in the aisle.
- Are Los Matadores heels or babyfaces? They are never consistent in that area.
- It's too bad the Ascension haven't taken off on the main roster. They were entertaining in NXT.
Neville and Cesaro vs. Kevin Owens and Seth Rollins
6 of 7Rollins, Owens, Cesaro and Neville are four of the most talented and versatile wrestlers on the roster, so it should come as no big shock they stole the show in the main event.
Cesaro and Neville made for an interesting tag team. Their styles complemented each other well. Rollins picked up a dirty win by using Cesaro's tights for leverage, but the good guys came out on top in the post-match brawl.
Each of these four men is a product of years of toiling on the indy scene. They might work the WWE style now, but they still use all the tools that got them noticed in places such as Ring of Honor.
Grade: A
Notes and Highlights
- Here are two interesting facts about the four men in this match: All four of them have wrestled for Ring of Honor, and all four of them have held gold in Pro Wrestling Guerrilla.
- How appropriate that Neville is called a superhero and he partnered with the Swiss Superman.
- Cesaro wins the award for most innovative counter into a Sharpshooter.
Final Thoughts and Predictions
7 of 7SmackDown has been producing some great shows lately, and this week was no exception. Every match was entertaining and had just the right amount of time.
Every segment dealt with a different SummerSlam storyline. As we get closer to the big event, we can expect to see those feuds dominate every program.
We also have the upcoming NXT TakeOver: Brooklyn special to look forward to, so it's going to be a busy two weeks coming up for WWE.
Predictions
- Sting will appear at SummerSlam or the following night on Raw.
- The Undertaker and Brock Lesnar will have another brawl on Raw.
- At least two titles will change hands at SummerSlam.
- At least two NXT stars will appear on Raw to promote TakeOver: Brooklyn.
- Dolph Ziggler will show up before SummerSlam to attack Rusev.
What did you think of this week's SmackDown?
