Mayweather vs. Berto Fight Card: Undercard Lineup, Predictions for Boxing Event
At this point, the storylines for Floyd Mayweather's bout against Andre Berto have been dissected and discussed at length. At this point, the discussions of Mayweather ending his career 49-0 or the disappointment many fans felt with the choice of Berto have been exhausted.
So, in anticipation of perhaps Mayweather's last fight, let's instead take a closer look at the undercard, which features two confirmed matchups for the pay-per-view lineup and one bout that will be shown prior to that on Showtime.
Ishe Smith vs. Vanes Martirosyan
This fight won't be on the PPV undercard, but it will be broadcast on Showtime prior to the event. It's an interesting bout between Smith (27-7) and Martirosyan (35-2-1). Smith is coming off a recent win against Cecil McCalla, while Martirosyan recently lost a close fight against Jermell Charlo.
Martirosyan is the more powerful fighter, with 21 knockouts on his resume, and he'll be the favorite. Whether he's able to knock out Smith is another thing entirely, though he admitted doing so was his goal, per Andrew J. Campa of the Glendale News-Press:
"For me, I look at it as another fight. I’m looking for bigger fights than Ishe. I’m not overlooking him, but Ishe is not a guy that I’m really crazy about, but I’m going to get the job done. I’m looking to finish him. He’s never been stopped and that’s something I want to do. I want to look really good in this fight and I want to make a big statement.
"
He won't knock out Smith, but he'll get the decision.
Prediction: Decision to Martirosyan
Roman Martinez vs. Orlando Salido

This rematch should be fun.
The two already faced off in April in a match made for fans who love a good old-fashioned slugfest, with Roman Martinez (29-2-2, 17 KOs) getting a decision in a thrilling bout that saw him drop Orlando Salido (42-13-2, 29 KOs) several times—and Salido dropping a point for low blows—and earn fight of the year buzz. Martinez also earned the WBO junior lightweight title.
Bleacher Report's Jonathan Snowden had nothing but praise for the bout at the time:
"Man, I promise you nobody who bought Salido vs. Martinez regrets a single penny of that money spent. #boxing
— Jonathan Snowden (@JESnowden) April 12, 2015"
It's pretty tough to pick a favorite out of these two. Martinez was the better fighter on that night, but the margin between the two isn't great. If the second fight is any indication, a trilogy between these two would be a lot of fun, and Salido will be extra motivated to ensure there is a reason to put on a third bout.
Prediction: Decision to Salido
Badou Jack vs. George Groves
Hey, one title match deserves another, right?
Badou Jack (19-1-1, 12 KOs) will be defending his WBC super-middleweight title against George Groves (21-2, 16 KOs) in another match that should be a heck of a contest (in fact, the undercard may end up being far more entertaining than the main event).
This is another tough bout to forecast, but look for Jack to knock off Groves, who has recovered with two wins after being knocked out twice in a row against Carl Froch.
Prediction: Decision to Jack
Jhonny Gonzalez vs. Jonathan Oquendo
Gonzalez (58-9, 49 KO) should come out motivated to impress in this fight after losing the WBC featherweight belt to Gary Russell, Jr. in March. He should be able to handle Oquendo (25-4, 16 KO), who hasn't generally fared well against top-tier competition.
Both fighters usually put on exciting displays, so don't expect any punches pulled in this one. Look for Gonzalez to earn an exciting victory.
Prediction: TKO to Gonzalez
