Five Things We Know After Week One

Paul MongeraSep 14, 2009

Hello fellow Brownies. I have come to five conclusions for Week One's performance by our beloved Browns. Contrary to what many may have thought especially Peter King from SI, we are a lot better than predicted.

The first conclusion is we have the best return man in football. I know you are thinking we already knew that, so did I. I just hope that idiot Lerner in England is reading this. Please Randy do what your old man would have done, and pay the man. How many more reasons must he give you Mr. Lerner before he packs his bag and goes to a team that will pay him. I mean Randy are you so stupid to realize, you have a Super Star that's wants to be in Cleveland. He is not asking for a bank robbers ransom, pay now or you'll pay later. Just then he will be wearing opposing team colors.

Second point I would like to touch on is our Defense, way better than I thought they would be. I would love to know the last time the Browns recorded 4 sacks in one game. They had pressure on Favre all day, and against a very solid offensive line. The Vikings were certainly no slouches for the Browns line. The blitzes, I had to stop and ask myself at the game if that was our Defense I was watching. They held the NFL's premier RB to only 25 yards at the half. Our only down side to the defense, was the lack of offense in the second half. Hence, they get blamed for poor tackling and playing sloppy. What do we expect with 3 and outs and 2 turnovers in the half. Great job Defense can't wait to see it next week in Denver with a lot less potent offense.

My next revelation was turnovers and penalties. Not quite the discipline I expected from a Mangini ran Basic Training. There is no excuse for the amount of false starts, especially at home. This is also the only part of the article where Quinn will hear any abuse. No way in hell can he fumble the ball like that again. Even you die hard Quinn fans have to agree, you better get hit and get hit hard if you fumble. Quinn's fumble reminded me of my 7 year old son's flag football games. No excuse and I won't even humor a comment if you post one. The INT, I won't give too much flack for, just was glad to see he decided to throw the ball 15+ yards. But the pick I feel was Quinn's fault. On that play Quinn and Edwards had to know the coverage and adapt, hence it was a WR option. On that play if the CB Griifin played Edwards to the outside, Edwards was supposed to cut in, and he did. And vice versa if he was playing Edwards on the inside. Quinn read the coverage wrong and that is why the throw was errant. Had he read the right coverage, Edwards has a TD no doubt about it. A mistake that can easily be corrected.

Next is all of you Jamal haters were shut the hell up for 1 day. To say he was out of gas, well he must have filled up before the game. Cause guys out of gas do not average 5.2 yards a carry on last year's number one run defense. He looked like the guy who used to run against us for 200 yards a game when he was with Baltimore. I just want to know why we stopped running after falling behind 17-14. Which leads me to my last point.

Last point was our Offensive Coordinator Daboll, he was the only thing offensive yesterday. I mean talk about horrible play calls. To call it conservative would be a understatement. I mean the first wild cat on 2nd & goal from the 6, I had no problem with that call. But again on 3rd and goal from the 2, no way. Lewis was running like a animal, and if I am not mistaken, isn't that what we pay him for, to punch it in? But the most troubling part of that call was to run Cribbs up the middle. Is he trying to get him hurt? Does he not know what happens at the bottom of piles? Stupid play call plain and simple. He abandoned the run way too early, which is also Mangini's fault, he is the coach and can change the play. Oh, and when do we run on 3rd & 9 on a draw. Great call.

In closing, all in all a lot for us too look forward to. And some of you say we have little talent on out squad. I disagree, I feel there is a lot of talent, just most have either never heard of (which will change) the guys or we just don't have enough tape to see how good they are. We will be OK this year just look out in 2010. The only thing I will close on with the QB situation we all blog about. I am a DA guy, everyone knows that. But Quinn was named our guy, we must support him, Unlike the Quinn fans who cheered last year when Anderson was on a stretcher. We must show more class. I feel if Quinn is no worse than 2-3 after week 5 leave him alone. But, if we are 1-4 or God forbid worse, time to give him the hook. He will of had his chance and failed. Then DA deserves a chance to change things. But in all honesty I hope Quinn is 4-1 after Week 5. GO BROWNS!
