Big E Showing His Worth to WWE with Eye-Catching Performances in the New Day
If there's one thing which must rank as a surprising success story in WWE over the last six months, it's the rise to prominence of The New Day as a heel stable.
It is by far and away the most legitimate and worthy contender for the WWE Tag Team Championships, and it's possible to even pin the team down as the shining group in the entire division at the moment.
After The New Day's disastrous start as a babyface group, WWE quickly acted and turned Big E, Xavier Woods and Kofi Kingston heel. Just like many other stars before it, the team has a catchphraseāor chant, in this caseāwhich the crowd has bought into to bolster its relationship with the group.
And whilst the members all bring their own individual qualities to the faction, the one who seems to be seriously catching the eye yet again is the former intercontinental champion Big E.
It was hard not to notice Big E when he first burst onto the main roster. After all, WWE gave him the freedom to go out and attack John Cena on his debut showing on Raw, which instantly gave him plenty of heat to work with.
In the months following that, he formed a neat alliance with both AJ Lee and Dolph Ziggler, and did a pretty successful job of working as their enforcer. He had the look as well as the in-ring ability, and it all seemed to work.
He was even scripted to be Kaitlyn's love interest in a storyline that was ultimately a ploy from AJ Lee to get one over on her rival, but it showcased Big E's overwhelming talent both in and out of the ring.
When WWE broke him away from Ziggler and Lee, turning him into a solo star in his own right, Big E continued to thrive. A good, solid run as intercontinental champion followed at a time when the title wasn't the most prestigious it had ever been, but again he pulled the role off well.
So fast-forward to the present day and his role as the heavyweight of The New Day, and it should come as little surprise to see him doing so well yet again.
What's most impressive about Big E is the overriding amount of energy he puts into every performanceāwhether it be during a match, whilst cutting a promo or even just striding down the ramp to make his way into the ring.
That was no more evident than in the past few weeks, as he's become somewhat of a social media sensation for his enthusiastic dancing:Ā
But let's tackle his in-ring ability, first and foremost. Unlike a number of WWE's big men, Big E has phenomenal agility and a neat wrestling style which instantly makes him appealing to wrestling fans.Ā
He's increasingly scoring more and more pinfall wins too, which suggests he's rapidly emerging as the main threat of the group. Given his size and stature, that's exactly the way it should be.
But then there's what happens outside of the ring. Although Woods is the mouthpiece of the group and does most of its promo work, whenever Big E gets a hold of the microphone, it's incredibly amusing.
He takes on the role of a heel who just doesn't care what people think of him really well, and again, his enthusiasm for the role he's performing is hugely infectious.
When The New Day comes to an end in weeks, months or even years, it's obvious that all three members will go in separate and contrasting directions. However, what Big E is showing with his latest role in the group is that whatever project or storyline WWE hands him, he can pull it off with success and have plenty of fun along the way.
Will he ever be a WWE world heavyweight champion? That's unlikely, but a strong midcard is just as vital as a strong main event for WWE to be a success.
Guys like Big E will be the backbone of that for years to come.
