Wednesday Recap

West Side Little League from Hamilton, Ohio, got the best of Indiana's New Albany Little League 5-4 with a stunning three-run rally in the bottom of the sixth to win in walk-off fashion.

The victorious side's leadoff man Kurtis Reid shined in smacking three hits in four at-bats, including an RBI single in the last inning. Reid also came home for the winning run after a wild pitch by Luke Vick to create a most unconventional yet captivating conclusion.

1450 WMOH Game Night provided brief video of Reid's postgame comments:

In the first of two contests in the Mid-Atlantic, New York responded to a three-run bottom of the second by Washington, D.C., with six runs in the top of the third. Even though the latter plated two runs in the last, it wasn't enough to prevent New York from winning 10-8.

Payton Bennett batted second in the lineup and was 2-for-4 with three RBI to help New York boost its record to 2-1.

Elsewhere in the Mid-Atlantic, Maryland handled Delaware to the tune of 15-3. It was a close game for a couple of innings, but Maryland broke it open with five runs in the third and eight runs in the fourth. Dylan Pasta had himself an incredible game and tallied three hits, a home run, three runs, a walk and five RBI in four plate appearances.

Missouri-Webb City's offensive eruption ensured the Midwest's Wednesday opener would be of the more lopsided variety. The team defeated Nebraska 15-4, exploding over the final three innings after the game entered the top of the fourth tied at three.

Cale McCallister set the tone at the top of the order for Missouri. McCallister drove in a whopping six runs, half of those coming on a three-run homer in the fifth to truly blow the game open.

Vermont's balanced offense supplied nine RBI from six different players en route to a 10-5 New England regional victory over Massachusetts. It was an impressive opener for Vermont considering its opponent had just beaten Maine 11-0 on Monday.

New Hampshire knocked off Connecticut 16-1 in the other New England Regional contest behind home runs from Austin Bequeath, Kyle Lavigne and Zach Fletcher. Lavigne drove in six runs by himself, while Connecticut only tallied a single hit.

In the Northwest, Idaho built a 14-0 lead and then held on for dear life the rest of the way during a 16-11 win over Montana. Beau Barowsky drilled a grand slam in the victory.

Colorado beat Arkansas 11-9 in a back-and-forth contest with a number of momentum swings in the Southwest. Colorado pushed three runs across in the bottom of the fourth to overcome 8-7 deficit and received two home runs from Trevor Moore.

Hawaii's offense put up a crooked number during its 14-3 victory over Nevada in the West Regional, but the final score was misleading.

It was actually a back-and-forth affair until Hawaii exploded for 11 runs in the top of the fifth. While the pitching staff deserves credit for holding Nevada to four hits, it was the offense that won the game for Hawaii behind two home runs from Hunter Sasaki and another from Charles Winchester.

Mechanicsville, Virginia, is carving out quite a resume in the Southeast.

Virginia improved to 4-1 Wednesday with a 5-2 win over Florida, benefiting from Brett Allen's exceptional pitching performance. Allen was one out short of a complete game, tossing 5.2 innings and yielding only two hits, two runs with 13 strikeouts and just one walk.

Mitch Carr of 8News Richmond observed how Allen helped his own cause by producing a run of his own:

The Canada region had three games on tap for Wednesday. In the first contest, British Columbia knocked off Alberta 5-1 to improve its own record to 4-1. Then Quebec carved out a moral win of sorts in prevailing over the 0-5 Prairies' Moose Jaw Little League 11-3 for its first win in regional play.

In terms of takeaways for some potential contenders, there's no denying McCallister is a legitimate star to watch. If Missouri is able to make it to Williamsport, don't be surprised if McCallister distinguishes himself as one of the main players to watch considering his dominance Wednesday.

Starting pitching is always important in baseball. Virginia seems well on its way to bigger and better things. With an ace pitcher like Allen in the fold, there's no telling what Mechanicsville can do moving forward.
