Lionel Messi, Lamine Yamal Iconic Bath Photo to Become 1-of-1 Trading Card After World Cup
An iconic photo will now become a trading card following Sunday's World Cup Final.
Topps announced Monday that the picture of Argentina's Lionel Messi holding Spain's Lamine Yamal when he was an infant will be made into a one-of-one trading card. It will be made available in Topps Stadium Club UCC later this year.
The photo of the then-Barcelona star was taken during a 2007 UNICEF fundraising photoshoot. Few would have guessed that Yamal, now 19, would turn into the star he is today.
Yamal currently plays for Barcelona, the team Messi led from 2004 to 2021. On Sunday, Yamal and Spain beat Messi and Argentina in what will likely be the soccer legend's final World Cup.
"Honestly, that photo of us is crazy, because — well, that's life, right? I took a photo with him as a baby, and here we both are, facing off in a World Cup," Messi said Friday, per Dermot Corrigan and Paul Tenorio of The Athletic.
The trading card will be iconic the moment it hits the market, but if Yamal continues his rise to stardom, it could be worth a fortune one day.
