Lionel Messi Visibly Emotional in Videos, Photos After Argentina's World Cup Final Loss to Spain

One of the greatest players in soccer history played what will likely be his final World Cup match on Sunday.

Lionel Messi and Argentina fell to Spain 1-0 in extra time in the World Cup Final.

Four years ago, Messi and Argentina felt jubilation as they hoisted the World Cup trophy. This time around, there was no celebrating.

Frustration boiled over for several Argentina players after the match.

It's easy to understand why the Argentina players were frustrated with themselves afterwards. Spain completely dominated throughout the match, and Argentina finished with no shots on goal.

Spain controlled 65 percent of the possession and fired off 12 shots on goal. Had it not been for Emiliano Martínez's record-setting 11 saves, Argentina wouldn't have been in the game at all.

Argentina had a few late chances in the form of corner kicks, and it nearly capitalized on one of them.

Ultimately, Ferran Torres' goal in the 106th minute proved to be the decider.

Even though Messi couldn't close out his World Cup career with a win, he's firmly established his place in history. He became the all-time World Cup goal scorer in this tournament before being passed by Kylian Mbappé on Saturday.

Messi has won two Golden Ball awards and has appeared in the most World Cup matches of any player. He, of course, led Argentina to a World Cup title in 2022 as well.

Messi has yet to confirm whether the 2026 World Cup will be his last, but he'll be 43 years old by the time the next tournament comes around, so it's fair to assume that he won't be on the roster by then.
