Kylian Mbappe Talks 'Tremendous Amount of Disappointment' After France Eliminated from World Cup
French superstar Kylian Mbappé discussed how he was feeling after suffering a 2-0 loss to Spain in the semifinals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Tuesday.
"Like everyone, a lot of disappointment," Mbappé told French outlet M6 (h/t Dante Gonzalez of World Soccer Talk). "It was a dream for us to reach the final, to give our country that chance to dream, to make history… Now, it's something we have to face with our heads held high. There is a tremendous amount of disappointment; I can't quite find the words for it. We'll have to lift our heads up, go on holiday, and start again. Football waits for no one. Other things will be at stake at club and international level."
France was among the favorites to win the World Cup heading into the 2026 competition.
The French squad previously fell to Argentina in a penalty shootout during the 2022 World Cup final, but Mbappé finished with a hat trick in the loss.
He also helped his national team win the 2018 World Cup.
France didn't find as much success offensively on Tuesday, as Spain jumped out to a 2-0 lead early in the second half following a penalty from Mikel Oyarzabal and a strike by Pedro Porro.
The French squad ended the match with seven corners and three shots on goal, but couldn't get on the board.
As for Mbappé, he recorded three shot attempts and five duels won.
While the 27-year-old was disappointed with Tuesday's defeat, he put together an impressive overall performance throughout the tournament.
Mbappé racked up eight goals, tied with Lionel Messi for the most among all players during the World Cup.
He won't be advancing to the final for the first time in his career, though.
